He waka eke noa - We are all in the same canoe.

This has never been more true as Wingspan approaches its 34th birthday. It is only thanks to the support of our community that we continue our mission to restore New Zealand's birds of prey into our daily lives.

It is National Volunteer Week - Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu - and we want to take this opportunity to give a shout out to our incredible volunteers. Whether you offer support with field work, events, daily maintenance or DIY, you are a valued member of our team and we can't thank you enough!

Join us in sending some love to our vollie superstars! 🫶

Here’s a fun throwback!

11 years ago today we banded the first pair of barn owls recorded breeding in New Zealand.

The nest, first discovered in 2008, was in an old pūriri tree up in Kaitaia, Northland. The same pair nested in that very tree for 17 years before it fell in a storm.

We are painting the town green again! 💚

Greening Taupō Day is a community Arbor Day planting event with support from Taupo District Council. Join us from 10am-2pm this Thursday, to plant 4000 native trees, participate in the range of free activities and enjoy a sausage or soup for a gold coin donation. Special guests will be there to entertain and educate, along with a wide range of conservation experts and local businesses running free fun activities.

This planting is part of the long-term vision of creating native corridors into Taupō to bring native wildlife to urban Taupō and link up the remaining stands of native bush, and Wingspan is proud to be a part of this kaupapa 🌿

See you there!

Recently, Wingspan trustee and contractor Noel went on a treasure hunt.

The treasure? Barn owls.

Barn owls were first recorded breeding in New Zealand in 2008, and as such, are classified as a native species. They are thought to be of the subspecies Tyto alba delicatula, known as the eastern barn owl in Australia.

With the cooperation of land owners, Wingspan and local ecologist Kevin Matthews have visited known nest sites every year since, eager to learn all about the new arrivals and collaborating on multiple research papers.

Can you spot the treasure? 👀

The foot-eye coordination of our kārearea New Zealand falcon is seriously impressive.

The quick reactions of a falcon are thanks to a high flicker fusion frequency rate - a phenomenon that enables them to see rapid movement often invisible to the human eye.

Flicker fusion frequency is the rate at which flickering stimuli become perceptually stable. A simplified way of describing it is as 'frames per second'. Humans can see around 60 frames per second, although movies run at around 25 frames per second and we perceive it as a moving image.

A peregrine falcon, for example, can see up to 129 frames per second 👀

While the FFF of our kārearea hasn't been studied, staff at Wingspan can definitely confirm - their reactions are lightning fast ⚡

Today is International Day for Biological Diversity. So, what is biological diversity, or biodiversity, and why is it important?

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth. The richness and interconnectedness of life in all its forms. It is often considered as genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity. It could be a rainforest filled with thousands of plants and insects, or a reef filled with fish, coral, algae and microorganisms.

The benefits of biodiversity are huge. Biodiversity supports food production and pollination. It provides medicines and raw materials. It helps clean water and air, maintains healthy soils, and makes ecosystems more resilient to disease and climate change.

Importantly, when biodiversity declines, ecosystems become less stable and less able to support life. This includes human life.

So today, let's recommit to protecting biodiversity - the very thing that gives us life. 🌿
