The Kāpiti Coast is a special place, not just for us, but also for the native flora and fauna that call it home 💚 Some places on the coast hold more than just land. They hold history, ecology, and stories worth protecting. That’s where our Heritage Fund comes in.

This grant helps landowners with heritage features on their property care for and protect these taonga. Applications are now open and close 13 July 👉🏽 www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/heritage-fund

The fund supports projects protecting ecological, geological, historical, and cultural sites across Kāpiti. One neat example is the Kotukutuku Restoration Project in Paraparaumu, where predator control has helped birdlife thrive again. We're all about backing local legends and their mahi that protects these special places for generations to come 💚

In this week's , we headed along to Pharazyn Reserve with our friends from Waikanae School and Kapakapanui School to celebrate 20 years of planting at this special spot 🌱

Over the past two decades, more than 2,000 local school kids and community members have rolled up their sleeves to help plant over 40,000 trees in this space, including ngaio, kānuka, mānuka, harakeke and tī kōuka. This year, around 150 tamariki helped to carry on this tradition.

Pharazyn Reserve is part of the Te Harakeke Wetland Complex, the largest dune swale wetland still in a relatively natural state on the coastal plain of the Foxton Ecological District. It's also the largest and most intact remnant of 'The Great Swamp', which once stretched across more than 9,200 hectares of the Kāpiti Coast.

Twenty years of little hands doing big mahi for our wetlands! Check out some of our favourite pics from today, as well as a few throwbacks to planting days gone by.

A huge mihi to all the students, teachers and volunteers who've worked hard over decades to make sure this special place will thrive for generations to come.

Waste-not! Got an idea for a neat project that prioritises minimising waste? We've got a grant for you, and applications close soon on 21 June! Apply now 👉🏽 www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/LessWasteGrants

From grass roots community projects to big business ideas, our Less Waste Grants help to support practical projects that make a real difference reducing waste in our community.

🌿 Local Business grants: helping local businesses, organisations and social enterprises make practical changes that reduce waste and create lasting impact.

🌿 Community Project grants: supporting community groups, kura and businesses to bring less-waste ideas to life, get people involved, and make a positive difference for the Kāpiti Coast.

These grants are funded through the waste levy fees (collected from waste disposal operators) redistributed by the Ministry for the Environment

Stop right now, thank you very much! Our local school tamariki will be thanking you big time when you slow down in the new 30km/h zones outside their school and kura 💙

That’s right, we’re rolling out new 30km/h variable speed limits across more school zones in the district, helping to keep tamariki and whānau safer on their journeys to and from school. So, if you’re driving past a school and see a sign flashing 30, you know what to do.

These updated zones will be legally enforceable from 15 June and operating on school days during peak drop-off and pick-up times. You’ll see new zones at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Rito, Te Kura-ā-iwi O Whakatupuranga Rua Mano, Kapakapanui School, Paraparaumu School, Kenakena School, Raumati Beach School, and Paekākāriki School.

So be a Good Coastie 💙 Slow down, look up, and look out for our precious poppets when travelling through these areas.

Should we merge with other councils? The Government is proposing a shake-up of local government, and Kāpiti needs a strong local voice in that conversation.

Share your thoughts 👉🏽 haveyoursay.kapiticoast.govt.nz/LocalGovernmentReform

Under the proposed changes, regional councils will no longer exist. Instead there will be larger, combined councils.

We’re asking everyone to complete our survey by Tuesday 30 June to help us understand what our community values, and what people want protected – this will help ensure Kāpiti’s voice and identity is reflected in future decisions.

Your feedback will give us the best chance of protecting our local voice and our district's identity.

There is nothing bore-ing about the water supply in Ōtaki! Especially when it comes to keeping the community supplied with safe, reliable drinking water 💦

On Tasman Road, right before the speed change as you're heading towards Ōtaki Beach, we'll soon be starting mahi to drill a new bore. This replaces an ageing bore that's been serving the community for 30 years. That's a pretty good innings!

This project is expected to take 12 to 14 weeks and, while there might be some temporary disruption, Tasman Road will remain open, with safe pedestrian access, reduced speeds, and just a slightly different lane layout while we get this done.

With some of the best drinking water in the country, installing this new bore helps keep that awesome reputation going and future-proofs the drinking water supply of Ōtaki. This mahi is also part of our wider infrastructure investment to build a more resilient network for Ōtaki, both for now and for future generations.
