With fairly clam weather at the moment it's hard to imagine what may sneak up on us on Sunday. However the best time to prepare is NOW.
Here's some really helpful info from our friends at Civil Defence. Please take the time to read so you'll be ready and stay safe.

We’re monitoring Cyclone Vaianu as it moves towards New Zealand, with wind and rain expected to reach Taranaki from Sunday.

There's still some uncertainty in the intensity and the impacts for us locally but it's a good reminder to be prepared for potential power outages and surface flooding around the region.

Take some time while its calm over the next few days to get prepared.

Preparing for no power

➡️If the power goes out, eat the food from your fridge first, then your freezer. Then eat the food in the cupboard or your emergency kit.
➡️Use torches or battery powered devices for lighting instead of candles. Don’t use candles and oil lamps if possible.
➡️Turn off appliances to avoid damage when power returns
➡️Fully charge your devices and consider having a spare battery or mobile power pack
➡️Know how to override your garage door
➡️Have a stock of food that doesn’t need to be cooked or something to cook your food on (gas barbecue or camp stove). Don’t forget food for babies and pets.
➡️Check on neighbours especially older or vulnerable people
➡️If you or someone in your house is medically dependant on power, check with your doctors and power company to ensure there is a plan in place

Know how your will stay informed
➡️A solar or battery powered radio (or your car radio) can help you keep up to date with the latest news Check which FM and AM channels we get in Taranaki

A gentle but important reminder for our community:

When incidents happen — fires, car crashes, or medical emergencies — please avoid sharing unconfirmed information, speculation, or gossip online or in person.

Posts and conversations can reach family members before they’ve been formally informed, causing unnecessary distress and confusion during an already traumatic time.

For those first responders assisting at the scene, bystanders giving space and limiting discussion to facts to assist us helps us do our jobs safely, respectfully, and with focus on the people who need care.

Compassion sometimes means choosing not to ask, not to share, and not to assume.

We are incredibly lucky to have a community with multiple doctors, nurses, emergency responders, and medical staff who do step in to help when our community needs it most — your care and dedication never go unnoticed. Please just talk to the Officer in the White or Red Helmet prior to rushing in so we can manage the scene safely.

Kia aroha tātou ki a tātou anō, kia manaaki, kia whakaute.
Let us care for one another with compassion, kindness, and respect.

If you spent most of 2025 wondering what all that siren wailing was about, here is a summary of our calls for the year.

Thanks again to our families and employers who allow us the time to respond when called on at all times of the day and night.

Thanks also to our Oakura community and sponsors who supported us throughout the year.

We wish you all a safe new year and restful summer holidays.

🚒✨ Spooky fun is back at Oakura Fire Station! ✨🚒

👻 Join us (if you dare!) for our Halloween Party on
📅 Friday 31st October | 4PM – 7PM

There’ll be:
🔥 A live fire demonstration (super cool – but don’t worry, the sausages aren’t cooked in it!)
🌭 A sausage sizzle for hungry monsters thanks to our friends at Oakura 4square!
🍬 Buckets of lollies for every little ghost and goblin

🎩🕷️ Come dressed in your creepiest, cutest, or funniest costume — even our firefighters might look a little ghoulish that night!

👨‍🚒 Parent note: Because we’ll have a live fire demo, please stay with your preschoolers to help keep things safe (and spooky in the best way!).

We can’t wait to see Oakura’s little monsters, witches, and superheroes for a frightfully fun evening! 🎃🔥

Hi Family, Whanau and Friends. Lately we’ve noticed an increase in members of the public using the fire station carparks in front of the appliance bay for school runs.

We must respectfully ask that people don’t do this due to safety risks.

We appreciate these carparks are empty for large periods of time (which is a good thing) but when needed we can’t afford to have someone dropping off or picking up kids and being parked there. This area is not a public zone.

As an example. We have had the appliance trying to pull out of the appliance bay while school children are running round, parents parked on yellow lines restricting the turning area for truck, we've even had a person wander in front of the truck & into the appliance bay as we were about to pull out.

Why wasn’t the truck siren sounding I hear you ask….? Well we don’t turn it on until clear of the engine bay, due to noise risks for people still inside the station.

The area around the fire station must be kept clear at all times. Do not continue to use the carparks, be aware of the yellow lines as they are there to ensure there is enough room for the appliance to turn out onto the road. Please don’t be offended if you’re approached by FENZ members and asked to move. It is for the safety of kids, the public and brigade members.

Thanks for taking this on board and here's to a safe summer for all.

⏰ It’s daylight savings and time to check your smoke alarms. 🚨
Like a teenagers bedroom it won’t vacuum itself so make sure you give your alarms a quick vacuum to make sure no dust or insects have settled in over winter.
Also it’s a great time to change the batteries to make sure your alarms are energised for the coming months.
Bring on a safe summer! 🌺 🌞
