Friends of Monarch Park

Friends of Monarch Park The original overall objective was to improve Monarch Park and create a place where families and the wider community can come together to enjoy the outdoors.

By 2020, most of this work had been achieved and it was suggested that this page could be archived. However, in early 2021, members of the Pest Free Kaipatiki Restoration Society suggested that they work with Friends of Monarch Park to control rats, w**ds and other pests both in the reserve and in the surrounding area. When we started, our initial ideas for the upgrade included:
- A Bike track (ar

ound perimeter of lower park), connecting with other walking & bike tracks – Onepoto domain ‘look & feel’
- Stormwater – maintenance & improvements – bring ducks back into Monarch, clear up w**ds, native planting to prevent pollution and sediment, possibly fencing some sections
- Seating – tables, seats, benches (see Trias Road & Onepoto park for design ideas)

The things we'd love to see happen:
- A Flying fox
- Slip & slide water day
- Public art – sculpture that can be climbed on

Other ideas:
Structure for shelter from sun & wind, place for birthdays (pasifica design)
Improved Signage
Community events – family fun days, summer street/park party, movie night, music, kite day – bringing the community together
Sign & noticeboard for friends of monarch park
Planting days/Clean-up days
Preschool playground improvements
Community garden
Bins – including dog waste
page
Ensure park maintained to a good standard – mowing, w**ding, litter

Amazing afternoon w**ding today a little bit of Monarch Mahi. Look at that pile of honeysuckle that was choking our natives! Every third Sunday each month between 1 and 3 you will find us here. Good chats, learning from each other, looking after our park!

Join us in restoring this beautiful park by planting 500 native plants, and stay for the sausage sizzle afterward!

Planting native species in this wetland environment helps stabilize the banks and enhance our flood resilience. It also filters the water, improves stream health, provides food and shelter for local wildlife, controls w**d growth, and beautifies the park for our enjoyment!

Bring with you:
* Sturdy, covered shoes or gumboots
* Gloves or spades will be provided, but feel free to bring your own trusty tools
* Weather appropriate gear (rain or shine) and clothes you are happy to get dirty in
* Drink bottle and sunblock
* Your friends and whānau! Planting events are suitable for all ages!

RSVPs to [email protected] are appreciated to ensure we have enough food for everyone!

If there are times that suit people better please let me know 😀
