Your phone has one job on Sunday evening: BE LOUD!

Between 6pm and 7pm Sunday, New Zealand's annual test of the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system will be sent to all capable mobile phones and SIM-connected devices nationwide.

This is only a test, but it's an important one. It helps make sure the EMA system works when we need it most during emergencies such as severe weather, tsunami, volcanic activity, or other situations where urgent information needs to reach people quickly.

When the alert arrives:
✅ Read the message on your screen
✅ Press the volume button on the side of your phone if you'd like to silence the sound while keeping the message visible

❗ If you have a hidden phone for personal safety, or if the sound of the alert may affect your physical or mental wellbeing, consider turning off SIM-connected devices or placing them in flight mode between 6pm and 7pm.

⚠️ New Zealand's annual test of the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system will be sent on Sunday 14 June between 6pm-7pm to all capable phones and other SIM-connected devices ⚠️

This test makes sure the EMA system works as it should nationwide, and helps keep you safe during future emergency events.

❗ If you have a hidden phone for your personal safety, or the sound of the alert affects your physical or mental health in any way, we recommend turning off any devices with a SIM connection between 6-7pm on Sunday 14 June, or putting them into flight mode.

👉📱 You can mute the sound of the alert by pressing the volume button on the side of your phone – this mutes the sound of the EMA while leaving the message on screen for you to read in full.

Many people might expect an Emergency Mobile Alert to go to everyone during an emergency.

In reality, alerts are sent to phones in specific areas where there’s an immediate risk.

So if you don’t get one, it doesn’t always mean nothing’s happening it just means your area may not be directly affected.

That’s why it’s helpful to stay informed in a few different ways:
📱 Follow official pages
🌧 Check the forecast
👀 Keep an eye on what’s happening around you

Emergency Mobile Alerts are just one tool to help keep people safe, the more ways you stay informed, the better prepared you’ll be.
