We are thrilled to acknowledge our wonderful Tanya, who has been recognised by Top of the South Community Foundation as a Community Hero and Champion Donor.

Tanya gives so much to our community through her ongoing commitment as a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor and trustee, and through her generosity as a donor.

Her kindness, leadership and belief in the power of mentoring continue to make a real difference for tamariki and rangatahi across Nelson Tasman.

Thank you Tanya, for the many ways you show up, give back and help strengthen our community. We are very lucky to have you as part of the BBBS whānau.

A special night at the circus for Cleo (Little) and Linda (Big) 🎪

It was only the second time Cleo had watched a stage performance, and Linda said she was completely delighted and in awe. Cleo had her hand up several times, hoping to be chosen to go on stage, and it was very clear her confidence is growing with every outing.
At the end of the evening, Cleo said, “I think I’d like to go into theatre,” and then shared that she would love to start taking classes.

These are the special moments mentoring can create, opening up new experiences, building confidence, and helping Tamariki imagine new possibilities for themselves.

A big thank you to Linda for sharing this lovely update, and to Nelson Host Lions and Circus Quirkus for making this special experience possible.

A very sweet week for Jian (Little) and Seb (Big), one of our School-Based Teen matches at Nelson Central School .

The pair spent their time making cupcakes together, with Seb showing Jian the ropes as he tried something fairly new. Alongside baking, they also enjoy playing board games, and Jian, who is a keen artist, has been teaching Seb how to draw.

Their match has a particularly special connection. Jian is new to Aotearoa New Zealand and his first language is Spanish, while Seb is fluent in Spanish. Being able to communicate so easily has helped them build trust and friendship, and Jian says he is excited for Seb to help him with his English too.

A beautiful example of connection, learning, confidence and friendship in action. 💜

Caleb (Little) and Nathan (Big) celebrating their 2 year anniversary at Joe’s garage.

These guys are a School Based Plus match and when they meet at school they often play basketball or simply walk and talk, sorting out the world. Outside of school they have been to mini golf, the Car Museum, bowling and in the coming months are hoping to get to a Giants match. Caleb is keen to be a professional basketballer when he’s older and we had to make it a quick anniversary so he could get to this weeks game!

Thank you to our wonderful Mentors. Mentor Appreciation in Golden Bay!

Last week in Tākaka, Rochelle and Tracee, and some of wonderful community based mentors gathered at the Telegraph Hotel Takaka Golden Bay. When our mentors come together it is always something special, a chance to pause and appreciate the heart they bring to their roles. Through conversations, shared laughter, and their experiences, there is a real sense of connection and purpose.
A big shout out to Jean and Ben from the Telegraph for your awesome hospitality and your ongoing support gifting us funds raised through their local raffles and Lion Foundation . This contribution makes a meaningful difference to our mentoring program and the young people we support.

We’re celebrating our wonderful Rochelle, who has been part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters whānau for three years.

Rochelle brings so much warmth, care and energy to her role, especially in the Mohua/Golden Bay community. Her genuine kindness, calm approach and commitment to supporting matches makes such a difference to the young people, mentors and whānau she works alongside.

We are so grateful for everything Rochelle brings to BBBS. Thank you for three wonderful years, Rochelle! 💜

A big thank you to Tinline Property for becoming our newest Cornerstone sponsor. 💙
Tracee, our Programme Director, recently caught up with Belinda, Centre Manager from Richmond Mall , alongside Chloe and Jamie from Tinline Property.
Richmond Mall has been a valued cornerstone sponsor of BBBS Nelson-Tasman for more than eight years, and we are absolutely thrilled to now also welcome Tinline Property as a cornerstone sponsor.

This support feels especially meaningful, as BBBS has a very special connection with Jamie, the CEO at Tinline . Jamie’s late father, Trevor Gaskell, was instrumental in bringing Big Brothers Big Sisters to Aotearoa New Zealand back in 1996. Through his work with NZ Police and his involvement with Rotary, Trevor helped establish BBBS here, served on our local Board and National Board, and also gave his time as a mentor to a young person.

It is wonderful to see that connection continue through Tinline Property’s support of our mahi today.
Ngā mihi nui, Tinline Property. We are so grateful to have you alongside us.

💙
A huge thank you to NBS Nelson Giants for generously offering our matches the opportunity to enjoy home games together as part of their match meetings.

Here are Decklyn (Little) and his Big Brother Hamish at Sunday’s game against the Otago Nuggets, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying a pretty special afternoon out.

Opportunities like this give our matches the chance to share new experiences, cheer on local talent, and create great memories together.

Ngā mihi nui, NBS Nelson Giants, for supporting our BBBS whānau. 🏀

Seven years of friendship for Helen and Jade 💛

Helen (Big) and Jade (Little) recently celebrated their 7 year match anniversary, and what a special connection they have built over the years.

They still catch up fortnightly and enjoy going for walks, playing board games, heading to the movies, including the Billie Eilish movie last week, and simply spending time talking and sharing life together.

Helen is in awe of Jade’s kapa haka achievements, while Jade says Helen is much sportier than she is! Over seven years, they have continued to learn from, and with, each other, building a deep and caring friendship along the way.

Congratulations Helen and Jade. Seven years of showing up, sharing laughs, and growing together is something very special. 💙
