Following significant deterioration of the Ahuriri Estuary boardwalk that joins onto Meeanee Quay opposite Nott Street, it is currently being removed.

The path remains open but may become inaccessible during high tides, in which case the alternative track along Embankment road can be used.

🦆 The ducks are loving the rain, but it is affecting some of our sites. 🌧️
🚗 If you are heading to Lake Tūtira in the coming week, please note that one entry road is closed due to surface flooding. 🌊 Higher lake levels are affecting road conditions and may take some time to go down. ⏳

With Cyclone Vaianu hitting Hawke's Bay on Sunday, we recommend you avoid DOC reserves, as trees and branches often come down in these events.

With the increased risk of flooding and tree fall, the following campgrounds are closed from Saturday 11th:
- Glenfalls
- Waikari River Mouth
- Lawrence road
- Mangatutu Hot Springs (HDC will likely close the ford crossing as river levels rise).

If you notice any damage post cyclone, please report it to [email protected].

Stay safe

Nau mai, haere mai to the unveiling of these magnificant pouwhenua and in recognition of the mana of Te Whanganui-a-Orotū. Karakia will take place on Thursday, April 16 at am at the Humber St entrance to the estuary.

Kia ora koutou

Six significant pou created by the late master carver Hugh Tareha have been restored by local Toi Māori practitioner Nathan Foote, marking a poignant moment in Hawke’s Bay’s cultural landscape. These pou, crafted from what Tareha affectionately called “Canadian kauri” – believed to be cedar – represent some of the final works by the renowned Māori artist who passed away suddenly in May 2022 at the age of 63.

We will be having a blessing on Thursday the 16th of April at 6am. We will be meeting at the end of Humber St, Ahuriri Estuary then moving to Meeanee Quay on the other side.

Please join us in celebrating the life of Hugh Tareha and Te Whanganui a Orotū.
