Warning

08/06/2026

Kia ora,

Local emergency declared for Wellington’s Southern and Eastern wards

Mayor Little has declared a local State of Emergency for the Paekawakawa/Southern and Moturangi/Eastern wards, responding to MetService’s Heavy Swell Warning.

Locals in waterfront properties between Ōwhiro Bay and Breaker Bay are requested to stay somewhere else tonight if they can and must evacuate no later than 9.00am tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Heavy Swell Warning will be in place from 3am Tuesday 9 June to 9am Wednesday 10 June.

Southerly wind waves combined (swell + wind) waves are expected to rise to 8-9 metres.

There will be two particularly dangerous periods. Everyone must stay away from the southern coastline:

Two hours either side of high tide at 11.19am Tuesday
Two hours either side of high tide at 11.42pm Tuesday

Kia ora e te whanau,

Recent floods showed that social media and websites alone don’t reach all communities.

Feel free to share the Swell messaging on our WREMO page through your networks https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BvtDpWS5Y/

Heavy Swell Warning for Cape Terawhiti to Turakirae Head
We are advising people living near exposed coastlines to prepare now for the possibility of coastal flooding, property impacts and road closures.
Key public messages are:

Stay away from beaches, shorelines and exposed coastal roads during the event.
Be prepared to stay with friends or family if your property has been affected by coastal flooding in the past.
Move vehicles and valuable items away from low-lying coastal areas where possible.
Monitor MetService, WREMO and local council channels for updates.
Report immediate threats to life through 111.
We’ll keep the public updated with relevant information throughout the event, including a further update this afternoon once MetService update their forecast.

Valid from 6am, 09 June to 6am, 10 June

Southerly combined waves rising to 7-8 metres Tuesday midday, then easing Tuesday evening. Peak period 12-14 seconds.

The highest risk period is typically at or within 1-2 hours of high tide:

- Cape Terawhiti high tides: 12:26 pm Tuesday 9th, 12:49am Wednesday 10th

- Wellington high tides: 11:19am,11.42pm Tuesday 9th

These swells could bring debris and surface flooding to roads, especially around high tide.

Take care walking or driving along roads exposed to the sea during this time.

Surfers, divers, recreational reef fishers/surfcasters should be extra cautious and avoid exposed locations.

Check the forecast before heading out on a boat, and if in doubt, do not go.

Keep an eye on the weather and visit

for the latest updates.

Take care, WREMO Duty Team.
