This a small Volunteer Fire Brigade with about 12-20 members supporting the Matatā Community and surrounding area. We have a fire appliance MATA941 and first response medical van MATA9433 and are responded to all Fire and Ambulance calls in our area. If you are interested in Donating to our team you can do so to the following accounts;

This is our charitable trust established to provide First Response medical
support to the wider Matata Community. Donations here go towards the operating of the MATA9433 Medical Van and
it's associated equipment.
- Fire Brigade Social fund 38-9019-0387322-01 is for a more general contribution
to the brigade which enables us to purchase additional operational equipment
that is not funded by FENZ.

🚒 National Volunteer Week 2026 🚒

This week, we celebrate and acknowledge the incredible volunteers who give their time, skills, and energy to support our community.

At Matatā Volunteer Fire Brigade, our members come from all walks of life. They leave family dinners, step away from work, get out of bed in the middle of the night, and put their hands up to help others when they are needed most.

Being a volunteer firefighter is about much more than responding to emergencies. It's about training, community events, fundraising, maintaining equipment, supporting each other, and being part of a team dedicated to serving our community.

To our current members, past members, families, employers, and supporters — thank you. Your commitment and support make what we do possible.

Kia ora whānau,

It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of a much-loved wahine, Angela “Angie” Semmens. Angie was a huge part of the Matatā brigade social club back in the day, a proud supporter of our brigade whānau, partner and mother of past members and an “Aunty Angie” to so many of us over the years.

Our thoughts are with all of Angie’s whānau and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

Thank you for the memories, laughter, support, and aroha you shared with so many in our brigade and community, you will be deeply missed and forever remembered Aunty Angie.

Angela was departing Gateway at 4pm, travelling via Matatā to Ōtakiri, where she will lay at 102 Ōtakiri Road, Edgecumbe.

Angela will be welcomed onto Irāmoko Marae on Friday 8th May at 9am, with the service to follow.

🔋Lithium-ion batteries can fail and cause fires🔥

This video footage from a home in Canterbury in 2019 shows just how fast a fire can start when a battery fails.

Lithium-ion batteries are in so many of our everyday items — phones, e-bikes, tools and more — but if they’re not used or charged safely, they can cause serious fires.

🔋 Stay safe with lithium-ion batteries:
• Always use the correct charger and battery for your device
• Don’t overcharge — unplug once fully charged
• Charge on a hard, flat surface (not beds, couches, or under pillows)
• Keep devices away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight
• Store and charge larger items like e-bikes away from living areas and exits
• Only use reputable products and get repairs done by professionals
• Ensure you have working smoke alarms to give you early warning in the event of a fire.

⚠️ Know the warning signs:
If a battery smells, swells, overheats, leaks, or makes unusual noises — stop using it immediately.
🔥 If a battery starts smoking or catches fire:
Get out, stay out, and call 111. Toxic smoke from battery fires is extremely dangerous.
♻️ Disposal matters:
Never put lithium-ion batteries in the rubbish — recycle them through your local council.

Lithium-ion batteries are powerful — and with the right care, they can be used safely. Take a moment to check how you’re charging and storing yours today.

Kia ora Whanua. With the Cyclone getting closer, there's a good chance that you may hear the Fire siren a number of times today. All it means is our crews are busy out and about helping keep people safe around our district.

Our advice to you is simply, ensure you're prepared.

Don't travel unless you absolutely have to. The less people on our roads, the safer it will be.

Have plenty of fresh drinking water ready in case the water goes off.

Most importantly, make sure you have an emergency evacuation grab bag ready. This needs to include everything you might need if you're away from your home for an extended period. Remember any medicines you are likely to need too.

Also, we may not be able to keep you up to date, so the best thing to do is keep listening to the official emergency response radio station - 1XX

Stay warm, dry and safe whanau.

We've had a busy start to the year with slightly above average call numbers.

We're often asked, "what calls do you get the most of?". Well the truth is that there is absolutely no pattern.

That's what makes being a volunteer fire fighter so interesting.........."call outs are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get". We'd prefer no call outs of course, but our dedicated team are always there for when someone's having a bad day.

If you want to know more about being part of our team, drop by the station at 7pm on any Monday night, our friendly crew would love to meet you.

✔️ Press the test button
✔️ Replace batteries if needed
✔️ Make sure you’ve got alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and living area
