Such a devastating loss to Muriwai.
Our condolences to the Whanau and friends of this courageous fellow firefighter.
Our hearts go out to you all.
Rest easy ❤

Tēnā koutou katoa, me te tangi atu ki a rātou kua ngaro ki te pō. He pānui aituā tēnei. Greetings to you all and acknowledging those who have been lost to the “night”. We are the bearer of sad news.

This afternoon our Fire and Emergency USAR Team retrieved the body they had located in the Muriwai landslide. It is with great sadness that we confirm that it is our missing firefighter from the Muriwai Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Our heart goes out to his family and to his friends and colleagues in the brigade. His death is being felt by our Fire and Emergency whānau right across the country.

Flags will be flown at half mast on all fire stations to acknowledge our firefighter’s death.

We are working closely with Police as they lead the formal procedures that are required when someone dies in these circumstances.

Fire and Emergency respects the family’s wishes that we do not confirm the name of our fallen firefighter at this time.

Nōreira e te rangatira, haere ki o tūpuna. Moe mai, moe mai, moe mai rā. We bid you farewell great chief, as you journey to your ancestors. Rest In Peace.

Change of fire seasons for Northland

Most of Northland has returned to an open fire season as from 8 am Friday 1 April.

At the same time, the section of the Far North north of Awanui to Cape Reinga and including Karikari Peninsula moves to a restricted season.
An open fire season means permits are no longer required to light an open-air fire.

“The significant rain across most of Northland over the last three weeks has lowered fire risks considerably.,” says Wipari Henwood, District Manager Northland, Fire and Emergency.
“As we move into autumn the risks are likely to remain low,” he says.

North of Awanui to Cape Reinga including Karikari Peninsula had a number of large-scale wildfires this past summer, and the area has reverted from prohibited to a restricted fire season today. Permits are still required to light an open-air fire in a restricted fire season.

Wipari Henwood thanks the Northland communities for their support and cooperation throughout the busy summer. He reminds everyone to be careful and check the weather conditions before lighting an open-air fire, whatever the fire season.

For more information, fire safety tips and whether a permit is needed for a specific location, go to www.checkitsalright.nz.

🔥Prohibited fire season for Northland🔥

All of the Northland Fire District will enter a prohibited fire season at 8am today (Friday 11 March).

A prohibited fire season means lighting any open-air fires is not allowed and all permits are suspended.

Northland District Manager Wipari Henwood says high winds and no rain in the District has been the deciding factor for this change.

“Northland’s weather forecast sees little to no rain for the next two weeks and, on top of that, a continuation of drying winds across all of the District,” he says.

“Northland currently has five active wildfires that are contained but still burning in the middle and a history of significant fires at this time of the year,” Wipari Henwood says.

“Our crews are also continuing to respond to other emergencies.

“As the surge of Omicron increases, we want to make sure we have full capability to respond to emergencies across Northland,” he says.

“By mitigating and reducing the risk of wildfire spread across our communities with a prohibited fire season, we can continue to do that”

Wipari Henwood asks all communities in Northland to do their part in helping to reduce the risk of wildfire spread.

“Please hold off lighting your fires until the weather conditions have changed and the risk of wildfires has minimised,” he says.

One spark is all it takes to start a devastating wildfire.

Awesome Mahi from everyone that has been involved with the Kaimaumau Fire...

Here's another glimpse into the firefighting effort going on at Waiharara this week. The crew working on the firebreak north of Kaimaumau took a quick break with their shovels while the helicopter pilot dropped another load of water on the flames. Thanks to firefighter Joel Cleaver for the photo.
