Petition of Christchurch Methodist Mission:
Increase and target investment in social and affordable housing for older people.

Petition request
That the House of Representatives urge the Government to increase investment in social and affordable housing in order to target funding towards housing for older people.

Petition reason
By 2048 40% of retirees will be renters, many reliant on NZ Super as their sole or main income. But NZ Super was not designed for renters: many older renters currently spend over half their Super on rent. Older people have a right to affordable, accessible, healthy housing. Ministry of Housing and Urban Development figures show that NZ is not building enough houses to meet this demand. We believe urgent investment by Government in older persons’ housing is needed to address this growing crisis.

At Abbeyfield, we understand that volunteering today comes with many demands on people’s time and energy. That’s why we’re especially grateful for those who choose to share their skills, compassion, and care with our residents and homes.

We appreciate our volunteers’ commitment, knowing they give their time amidst busy lives and rising pressures. Their willingness to show up again and again reminds us what community truly means.

We value their resilience and generosity in a changing world. Even as the cost of living rises and free time becomes scarce, our volunteers continue to offer warmth, companionship, and practical help that enriches daily life for our residents.

We admire the experience and wisdom of our volunteers, many of whom bring lifelong skills and insights to their roles. They demonstrate that age is not a barrier but a strength that deepens the connection between generations.

We are inspired by their adaptability and creativity. As community needs evolve, they are quick to find new ways to connect, support, and make a difference, often bringing fresh ideas or embracing new technologies that help us stay relevant and responsive.

We appreciate our volunteers’ commitment to inclusiveness. Every act of kindness, large or small, helps make Abbeyfield a place where everyone feels valued and connected.

Above all, we treasure their spirit of community. Our volunteers are the heart and hands of Abbeyfield, making it possible to offer companionship, independence, and dignity to older people across New Zealand.

Aotearoa is ageing faster than our housing supply

Aotearoa New Zealand’s ageing population is growing faster than our housing system is adapting. HUD projects the number of people aged 65 and over will rise from about 850,000 in 2023 to around 1.5 million by 2053.

That is not a distant trend. It will shape housing demand, care needs, and community wellbeing for decades. Abbeyfield homes offer a practical, community-based solution for older people who need secure and affordable housing.

We cannot wait for the gap to widen further.

Who doesn't like a competition "Guess Who This Is?"

Residents at Abbeyfield Katikati decided to give this a go. They pinned photos of themselves as babies/toddlers on a board, no-one guessed them all correctly, though it certainly gave them a challenge, brought laughter and interactions.

A special thanks to Nancy and Lynn, Sisters in Quilting for the fabulous quilt they donated to hang in one of the Abbeyfield House hall ways, it is a stunning piece of art that brightens up the Hall and many thanks to Mike our on call handyman for hanging it for us.
Nancy and Lynn also donated a quilt to the last two residents who moved into the house way back at the beginning of March.
Thank you very much the quilts are appreciated.
