Tug ps Samson towing in 3-masted schooner John Bullock to Hokitika River, 29 September 1865. John Bullock arrived Hokitika after 124 day voyage from Dunedin via Cook Strait. ps Bruce passed and cut across Samson, causing Samson to run aground on North Spit, followed by John Bullock. Samson wrecked. John Bullock stranded and damaged, but salvaged. Note ship wreck on South Spit. Painting by Fergus Sutherland, in "Catlins Bound", Mike McPhee, 2009.
