The Northland Tsunami Siren Network will be tested at the start of Daylight Savings on Sunday 28 September 2025 at 10.00hrs for around 2 minutes. The usual public information plan is underway, which includes public newspaper notices, radio advertising and the use of social media. This will be a test of the new tsunami siren network. The network will be monitored remotely for any faults. The old sirens will not be activated.

Please note the *slightly* extended test duration this time round. We received valuable feedback during the April test which helped us fine-tune this upcoming one. This adjusted test duration will ensure the sirens have time to complete their full test cycle and properly receive the activation signal, and will help confirm that all systems are functioning as expected.

Kia ora koutou,

As many of you would have noticed, there have been little impacts for Northland from M8.7 Earthquake.

Here are the key points from the latest National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) update regarding the ongoing Tsunami Advisory
Some areas of the NZ coastline experiencing strong and unusual currents have reduced.
Due to rebounding tsunami activity from South America, the east coast of both the North and South Islands and the Chatham Islands remain under a National Advisory and are likely to remain so overnight.
Strong and unusual currents on the eastern side of New Zealand may be present for another 24 hours.”
The next national update is expected around 7:30 PM, and affected areas will be reviewed and updated at that time.

So, at this stage the key message for Northland remains unchanged. Please continue to exercise caution around coastal areas, especially during high tides, as strong and unusual currents may still occur this evening and potentially overnight.
