Ko Matariki e ārahi i a tātou ki mua

Matariki guides us forward

This season invites reflection - remembering those who have passed, and holding space for gratitude and healing. We take a moment to acknowledge the people, stories, and experiences that continue to shape who we are.

Time Travel Thursday ✨

Step back in time as we explore the many lives of the Carlton Club Hotel.

Established in 1885, it served travellers, hosted meetings, and was a hub for business and leisure. The original building survived the 1931 earthquake, but was later demolished and rebuilt as the Lion Tavern in 1970.

In 1994 it became the much-loved Cobb & Co., followed by Gorries, and then Breakers in the late 2000s. Today, the site has been redesigned as a commercial building, with only Restaurant Ari at the rear hinting at its food‑and‑drink past.

What are your memories of this iconic spot?

Hey, crafty crafters! Late Night Which Craft is on again this week! 😍🧵✂️

Just drop in on most Thursday evenings, between 5 and 7pm at Hastings Library – this time is yours, no need to rush to get here.

Bring whatever you want to work on, whether you’re painting miniatures, whittling wood, doing needlework or something else. There are outlets for plugging in your sewing machine or hot glue gun.

These sessions are unstaffed – BYO supplies and learn from each other.

See you there!

As Matariki rises, we pause to mark the Māori New Year ✨

It’s a time shaped by the natural world - the appearance of this star cluster signals a moment to gather, reflect, and reset.

Matariki reminds us to honour the past, give thanks for what we have, and look ahead with hope. Here at our libraries, it’s also a time to celebrate knowledge, stories, and connection across our community.
