On Thursday, Hamilton councillors took part in a waananga, discussing some of the big issues shaping Hamilton’s growth.

While no decisions were made, there was plenty to cover, including updates on development in Peacocke and a briefing from the Templeton Group on their proposed hotel for Victoria Street.

Opportunities like this help make sure councillors are well-informed and in the best position to make good decisions for our city.

Here’s Councillor Maria Huata with more.

A massive shout-out to everyone who joined us at Tauhara Park on Friday for Arbor Day. It was fantastic to see so many people pitch in to help plant 10,000 native trees throughout the morning - what a great way to kick off the planting season! A special ngaa mihi nui to Trees That Count and Bupa NZ for donating 6000 of the trees. Thanks for helping restore nature in the city.

Missed out on joining us at Arbor Day? There are lots of other opportunities to get involved this planting season! Check out volunteerhamilton.rosterfy.co. to see what else is coming up.

Don't be alarmed, Hamilton!

A nationwide test of our Emergency Mobile Alert system is taking place this Sunday.

Check out the post from Civil Defence Waikato below for more information 👇

⚠️ New Zealand's annual test of the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system will be sent on this Sunday 14 June between 6pm-7pm to all capable phones and other SIM-connected devices ⚠️

This test makes sure the EMA system works as it should nationwide, and helps keep you safe during future emergency events.

❗ If you have a hidden phone for your personal safety, or the sound of the alert affects your physical or mental health in any way, we recommend turning off any devices with a SIM connection between 6-7pm on Sunday 14 June, or putting them into flight mode.

👉📱 You can mute the sound of the alert by pressing the volume button on the side of your phone – this mutes the sound of the EMA while leaving the message on screen for you to read in full.

📢 Have your say, Hamilton!

We’d like your feedback on the section of Peachgrove Road which sits outside Hamilton Boys’ High School (HBHS) and Peachgrove Intermediate. Thousands of residents, students and passing vehicles use the corridor daily.

During school drop off and pick up times, the area gets heavily congested. Local schools have advocated for a number of years for Council to invest in road safety improvements in the area.

To respond to this, we’ve developed four improvement options for Peachgrove Road between Wilson Street and Frances Street.

***update 9pm 5 June. This thunderstorm watch is what the 90s band Lighthouse call “Lifted!” (That includes Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula).

Calvin Harris said it best “ready for the weekend”. That is all, as you were ☺️***

***Update 7pm 5 June: the thunderstorms are travelling east over the northern North Island. The thunderstorm watch is now valid until 10pm, including Coromandel Peninsula.***

Our friends at MetService New Zealand have issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of Waikato, valid from 3pm - 8pm today (Friday 5 June).

Also for The Coromandel Peninsula valid from 5pm-9pm today.

Thunderstorms will be accompanied by heavy rain of 10-25mm/h and wind gusts of 100km. There is a moderate risk of heavy downpours of 25/40mm/h with or without thunderstorms.

Rainfall of this intensity could cause flash flooding especially in low lying areas.

🍁 Clear gutters of leaves
🛝 secure backyard play equipment and outdoor furniture
🌧️ never enter floodwaters

We're taking a proactive step toward the biggest shake-up of local government in decades by choosing to go for the Government’s ‘Head Start’ reform pathway.

So, what does that mean? We’ll be developing a proposal by 9 August 2026 that outlines how local government could be improved for our communities – creating a new system that is more fit for purpose. This may involve a merger with one or more councils to become a unitary authority, that would also deliver regional council responsibilities.

This is a significant moment and an opportunity to shape our future, rather than risk decisions being made for us later.

We know there’s a lot to consider, and the timeframes are tight.

That’s a wrap on our Nature in the City moth plant competition! 🎉

A huge congrats to Tamara Barrowcliffe, who absolutely went above and beyond in our Moth Plant Competition, collecting a whopping 2,972 pods/vines to take out the open category win! Well done also goes to Hamilton Boys' High School, who smashed it in the school category with an incredible 812 pods/vines (all from their own gully).

All place-getters and spot prize winners have now been contacted. Ngaa mihi nui to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and got involved (we’ve included just a few of the many awesome pics we received!), and a special shoutout once again to our awesome prize sponsors, Mitre 10 MEGA Hamilton, Jumpflex Trampolines, Daltons Garden & Landscape Supplies and Waikato Regional Council.
