Blaketown School

Blaketown School Welcome to Blaketown School. We are proudly a "Positive Behaviour for Learning School". Our Values are: Respect, Responsibility and Resiliency.

Blaketown School is classified as a full primary school and caters for Year 0 - 8 pupils. We are currently staffed by the Ministry of Education at 3.8 teachers with our Board of Trustees funding additional staff to maintain a favourable teacher/student ratio in our junior room. There is strong collegial support between the dedicated and hardworking staff. The school is supported by an active Board

of Trustees and Parent, Teacher and Friends Association. There is close liaison between the school and wider community. This is fostered by community use of the grounds for sports practice and school events. Parents frequently attend the school assembly on Friday afternoon and support their children at sports and cultural events. School wide behaviour management systems have been developed, successfully encouraging acceptable pupil behaviour. A wide range of support services are accessed when necessary to support staff in providing quality programmes for pupils of all abilities. The reporting to parents’ process is objective based and directly linked to class programming. Planning, assessment and evaluation systems are in place to help teachers deliver effective classroom programmes to meet the needs of the pupils and the New Zealand Curriculum which includes values, principals, and Key Competencies. Most of the pupils are drawn from the Blaketown area, however there are also pupils travelling from outside the area to attend this school. Our mission is to develop confident, motivated, independent life-long learners. Blaketown School – “Together We Learn”

Coastguard Visit – Water Safety Awareness 🚤

We were fortunate to welcome Zane Smith and Karla Skates from our local Coastguard, who spoke with our students about the important role Coastguard plays in keeping people safe on the water.

Living in an area surrounded by the sea, rivers, and lagoons, water safety is an essential topic for our students. Zane and Karla shared valuable information about staying safe on and around the water, including boating safety, planning trips, checking conditions, and the essential safety equipment that should always be carried.

The students were highly engaged and enjoyed learning from our visitors. A big thank you to Coastguard for taking the time to educate our tamariki and for providing each student with a goodie bag to take home.

We appreciate your support in helping our students develop the knowledge and skills needed to stay safe around water.

Trees For Change
Greymouth High School, in collaboration with Greymouth Rotary, has a goal to plant one tree per student in the Greymouth district. Trees for Change is a student-led business in the trades course of Conservation and Earthcare with Papa Taiao.
Today, they visited our school and planted trees with our students. The students led a presentation to the whole school and gifted some plants to the children, as well as planting. The high school students did a lot of preparation, visited, made a plan of the layout, and today it all came to fruition. Younger students were gifted plants to take home and grow.

As part of their unit study about water mammals, Room 4 had Callum RB from ‘Out the Back ‘speak to them today.

Callum is a master Skipper on the jet skis for the Coast Guard.

He also runs beginner surf lessons individually, in small groups, and for birthday parties. He spoke to the students about surfing, how to read the waves, and that if you know what you are doing, water recreation is lots of fun.

Ten of our students attended NYLD in Christchurch this week.
The Theme was Leaning into Fear Tūwhitia te hopo, mairangatia te angitū

Everyone feels scared sometimes, even the people you look up to. Even the people on stage. Even the ones who look confident and brave.

Every leaderwho spoke at NYLD has faced and overcome some kind of fear:
• Fear of getting it wrong
• Fear of standing out
• Fear of failing
• Fear of being judged
It’s about leaning in. Giving it a go. And being brave.

The students came away inspired and knowing more about resilience. They loved meeting up with students from other schools who were staying at the same place and of course doing some shoping.
