Department of Conservation - Te Tairawhiti Te Papa Atawhai ki te Tairawhiti -East Coast District - DOC Tairawhiti - evolving our relationship with our taiao

19/06/2026

Congratulations Raukūmara Pae Maunga Restoration Project on an awesome event this week "Te Kuwaha ki Hikurangi" at Takamore kawenata, Tapuaeroa Valley.
Got to attend a Night Walk, was inspired by the creativity of our whanau and moreso the concept of this event to engage our whanau with our ngahere.
The DOC Ranger geek in me was particularly impressed with the artistry of the wonderful pathway thru the bush! Love how you have transformed this kawenata, such an engaging learning space.
More of the DOC crew visited today and we were all like kopara! Chattering about the wonderful experience!
LAST DAY TOMORROW SATURDAY DONT MISS OUT! IT'S WORTH THE TRAVEL!

We’re offering FREE Kiwi Aversion Training

Kiwi aversion training teaches dogs to avoid kiwi helping reduce the risk of accidental kiwi attacks in the bush.

Whether your dog is a seasoned pig dog, a young pup coming through, or just enjoys spending time roaming near ngahere, this training is one of the simplest and most effective ways we can protect both our dogs and our kiwi.

✔ Free of charge
✔ Quick and effective
✔ Suitable for all hunting breeds and ages
✔ Helps keep access to hunting areas open and kiwi populations safe

Being good hunters and good kaitiaki go hand in hand. This is about looking after the ngahere we all love so future generations can still hear kiwi calling in the night.

Bring your dogs along, yarn with the team, and do your bit for the Raukūmara and our taonga species.
