William Pike Challenge 2026

Our amazing Year 7 and 8 students completed their first William Pike Challenge adventure today, tackling the beautiful Fern Walk in the Pohangina Valley.

The tamariki had a fantastic time exploring the outdoors, challenging themselves, and enjoying everything the walk had to offer. We were incredibly proud of the positive attitude, resilience, and teamwork they showed throughout the day. They did a fantastic job and are already looking forward to their next challenge!

A huge thank you to Rebecca, Dympna, and Natalie for providing transport and joining us on the walk today. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you also to Mr Gilbert for organising this wonderful opportunity for our students.

Well done, everyone!

STEM DAY IN ROOM 1!

Today, our amazing Room 1 students stepped into the shoes of scientists and engineers to investigate the laws of physics and the importance of fair testing!

The day kicked off with a construction challenge: building their very own ice block stick catapults. Once the builds were complete, the testing began! Students systematically launched a range of different projectiles to discover which ones flew the furthest and why.

But the learning didn't stop there. As true innovators, they analyzed their data and modified their catapult designs to see if they could maximize their power. The results? Absolutely incredible! We had some projectiles flying well over 25 metres!

We are so proud of the critical thinking, problem-solving, and determination on display today. Well done, Room 1, on your amazing mahi!

Inter-School Cross Country

What a fantastic day our tamariki had competing at the Inter-School Cross Country on Friday! It was wonderful to see all of our runners demonstrate such positive attitudes, determination, and perseverance as they gave their very best in every race.

We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you for representing Mount Biggs School so well and showing our school values throughout the day.

We had some great results, with many children finishing in the top quarter of their event. This is a great achievement with fields of well over 100 from across the Manawatū. A special congratulations to Kate Cox, who finished 10th in the Year 5 girls' race.

A huge thank you to all of the parents and whānau who provided transport, came along to support the children, and marshalled on the course. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you also to Mr Gilbert and Louise for all of the organisation that helped make the day such a success.

Garden Club Visit to Pedleys Nursery

What a fantastic learning opportunity for our Garden Club students when they visited Pedleys Nursery in Feilding.

Rebecca shared the fascinating history of Pedleys Nursery, which was established when the early settlers came to build Feilding. It was wonderful to learn that the nursery is still located on Queen Street, where it was originally established all those years ago.

The children were given a guided tour of the nursery, including all five glasshouses. They learned about strawberry plant preparation and were amazed to hear that the team was preparing 4,000 strawberry plants that day. They also had the opportunity to see Mr Pedley's impressive vegetable garden and learn about the work that goes into growing healthy plants.

Rebecca showed the students the process of growing annual flowers, from preparing the soil and sowing seeds through to nurturing the plants as they grow and are eventually sold in punnets. It was a valuable hands-on learning experience that helped the children understand the journey from seed to plant.

To top off an amazing visit, Rebecca very generously donated vegetable seedlings and flower plants for our Garden Club to add to the school gardens.

A huge thank you to Rebecca and the team at Pedleys Nursery for sharing your time, knowledge, and generosity with us. We are incredibly grateful for your support and look forward to learning more from you throughout the year.

A big thank you to Alex Atkins for organising this trip and transporting the children on the day.

Whole School Assembly

It was a fantastic way to finish the week by celebrating all the amazing things our tamariki have been doing at our whole school assembly.

We were treated to some outstanding persuasive writing from Room 4. Their arguments about whether pineapple belongs on pizza certainly had the audience thinking, and the vote at the end was too close to call!

Room 2 wowed us with their beautiful waiata and poi performance. It was wonderful to see the skills they have been learning with Miss Guylee and Mrs Wilton showcased with such confidence and enthusiasm.

A big thank you to our amazing hosts from Room 4, who did a fantastic job leading the assembly.

It was wonderful to have so many whānau join us this afternoon. Thank you for coming along and helping us celebrate the achievements of our incredible tamariki.

Enjoy the long weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday.

STEM in Room 1

Today, Room 1 took part in an exciting STEM challenge. As part of their learning, they explored changing variables, elastic potential energy, and kinetic energy, and investigated how these concepts affect the performance of a vehicle.

The tamariki did a fantastic job designing, building, and testing their vehicles, making improvements along the way to help them perform even better. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm, creativity, problem-solving, and persistence they demonstrated throughout the challenge.

Well done, Room 1. We are so proud of your efforts and the fantastic learning that took place today.
