From starving… to ready for release.

This stunning female hoiho from the Otago Peninsula was brought in by DOC at the start of her moult, severely underweight and unable to go to sea to feed. Without intervention, she likely wouldn’t have made it through.

Now, late in her third week of moult, she’s in great condition and on track to be released next week.

The band on her right flipper is just for identification and is completely safe for birds to wear.

To support out conservation efforts and help prevent the extinction of these stunning penguins, donate to the Opera using the link in our bio.

These numbers can be tough to see, but they're not set in stone.

With the right support, protection, and care, these species can still thrive. That's where organisations like OPERA make a difference, providing critical care when birds need it most.

It's not a lost cause. It's the daily, hands-on work that keeps populations going.
Donate to the OPERA to keep this vital conservation work going.

It’s World Wildlife Day!!

We wanted to celebrate the world's biodiversity of both plants and animals. While we are down at nearly the bottom of the world we have some pretty amazing wildlife and ecosystems calling our reserve home.

Despite the continued decline of animals and habitat world wide we have the privilege of observing and protecting what is still here. In our reserve we have an abundance of life supported by some amazing and unique ecosystems. Our botanist's top picks for favorite ecosystem at The OPERA are the coastal turf and remnant coastal bush. The remnant coastal bush supports a high diversity of invertebrates including the Kahukura, Red Admiral Butterfly. While being present all around Aotearoa, it is most common in Te Waiponamu due to higher numbers of the host plant Ongaonga. The coastal bush also supports our song birds that make working in the reserve a treat.

We hope to have you out here to share our taonga, treasures with you!

How cool is this!

Our friends over at the asked us if we would be able to release this Pāngurunguru, Northern Giant Petrel at our reserve. Of course we said yes!! While we typically work with the Wildlife Hospital for penguins, the team at the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital provide excellent veterinary care to all of our taonga, native treasures. It is always a pleasure to release wildlife back into te taiao where they belong. They have done an amazing job nursing this Pāngurunguru back to healthy weights.
