This Volunteer Week, we're celebrating the people who say yes.
Yes to giving their time.
Yes to sharing their skills.
Yes to opening their homes.
Yes to supporting tamariki and whānau in our community.

We're grateful for people like Steve and Chantelle, who help make our Oceans groups welcoming and supportive spaces. For Gillian, who creates beautiful handmade cards for participants. For St Luke's and St Mary's, who generously share their halls with us. For the volunteers who support our annual Street Appeal. And for our incredible caregivers, who open their homes and hearts to children who need care and connection.

Each act of generosity helps strengthen the support around local whānau.

Supporting warm, healthy homes

A few simple changes can make a real difference for your whānau.

These practical tips can help keep your home warmer, reduce dampness, and manage power use:
✔️ Set your heat pump between 19 and 21°C for efficient heating
✔️ Dry clothes outside when possible to reduce moisture indoors
✔️ Close curtains as the sun goes down to keep warmth in
✔️ Open windows daily to let out damp, stale air
✔️ Keep baby’s room at a steady 18°C overnight
✔️ Add layers and check little ones are comfortable
✔️ Check your power plan to make sure it suits your household

Small steps can support tamariki wellbeing and help create a healthier home environment.

We’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to St Lukes Oamaru for their generosity and warm welcome earlier this week.

After speaking at St Luke’s on Wednesday afternoon, we were incredibly grateful to receive donations of pyjamas and wool cot blankets from their AAW (Association of Anglican Women) group, presented by Catherine and Delia to our kaimahi, Sue, Jen and Mel.

These practical, thoughtful gifts will help bring comfort and warmth to pēpi and tamariki supported through our services. We’re very thankful for the care and kindness shown by the St Luke’s community.

We recently spent time at St Hilda's Collegiate School sharing why access to the right books can make such a difference for tamariki navigating big feelings.

For many of the whānau we support, emotions like anxiety, anger, or frustration can feel overwhelming — especially when children don’t yet have the words or tools to understand what’s happening inside them.

Books, such as those featured on the list we left with the students, help give language, comfort, and reassurance, reminding children that their feelings matter and that they’re not alone. We’re grateful to schools who make space for these conversations and help put practical, compassionate tools into young hands.

Sometimes school is about more than reading and writing.
For some tamariki, it’s the place where worries show up first – and where a trusted adult notices something’s not quite right.

Our Social Workers in Schools are part of the everyday life of the school. You might see them in the playground, in the classroom, or having a quiet kōrero with a child who needs a bit of extra support.
Being there means help is close, familiar, and stigma‑free – for tamariki and their whānau.

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Bingo Night on Wednesday night! We had a great time!

We’ve just run the numbers and we raised $2,089 and sold 550 raffles!
Well done to everyone who won. This money will go directly to supporting our work with whānau in the Otago region.
