The Meaning of Our Whare Tapu Monogram

🐢 The Honu (Turtle)
The turtle represents

Protection and longevity
Safe passage through turbulent waters
Resilience across generations
For NZCAST, the honu symbolises survivors navigating trauma, state care, and systemic harm, yet still moving forward with strength and dignity.

It represents a safe journey toward healing.

🌀 The Koru Spiral (in the shell)
The spiral reflects

New beginnings
Intergenerational healing
Growth emerging from pain
Placed at the centre of the turtle, it symbolises that healing is at the core of our kaupapa.

Our Whare Tapu is a space where survivors reclaim identity, whakapapa, and wairua.

🌺 The Frangipani
The frangipani represents

Peace and spiritual restoration
Sacred space
Pacific strength and softness together
It honours the diversity of survivors we serve Māori, Pasifika, and all whānau impacted by state and faith-based care. It reflects aroha wrapped in protection.

🌊 Flowing Water Elements
The water motifs surrounding the turtle represent

Emotional release
Cleansing
Movement toward transformation
Water can be turbulent but it also purifies. This reflects the survivor journey.

💎 Paua-Inspired Colours
The iridescent greens, blues, and teals symbolise

Depth
Hidden beauty
Strength beneath the surface
The sacredness of our stories
Just like pāua, survivors carry layers of experience each layer valuable and powerful.

Welcome to NZCAST Ōtautahi Charitable Trust.
This is a safe, survivor-led space for individuals who have experienced abuse or neglect in state or faith-based care, and for the whānau who walk alongside them.

We acknowledge that every survivor’s journey is different.

Some are actively navigating claims, reviews, or redress processes.

Some are seeking connection, understanding, or advocacy support.

Some are rebuilding their lives quietly.

Others may simply wish to observe.

All of that is valid here.

There is no pressure to share your story, to post, or to participate in any particular way.

You are welcome to engage as much or as little as feels safe and right for you.

Our Purpose
This space exists to

Share information about redress, reviews, ACC, MSD, and support pathways

Provide guidance and advocacy where possible
Ask questions and seek informed advice

Connect survivors with others who truly understand

Raise concerns respectfully and safely
Share resources, kaupapa, hui, and opportunities

Strengthen collective voice and mana
Support one another with compassion and integrity

Our Values

NZCAST Ōtautahi is grounded in

• Survivor leadership
• Cultural safety
• Whānau-centred support
• Accountability and integrity
• Respectful communication
• Mana-enhancing engagement

We ask that all members treat one another with care.

This is a space built on empathy, dignity, and shared lived experience.

This is not a place for judgement, minimising, or retraumatisation.

It is a place for truth, safety, and collective strength.

A Message to You

If you are here, you have already shown courage.

Whether you speak loudly, quietly, or not at all your presence matters.
