Brittany Glassey, who was granted a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship as a Research Student for 2026, writes about her life now. "I arrived in Japan in April this year to pursue my PhD studies, under the support of the MEXT scholarship. My research involves working with museums and analysing historic dress, so to pursue my studies in Kyoto is a dream. Everywhere I turn there is something new to learn while being surrounded by beautiful historic sites and buildings.

As I settle into life here, I am learning Japanese at Kyoto University under the Intensive Japanese Language Course before pursuing my PhD studies. I have been able to meet with other scholarship recipients from across the world - just last weekend we organized our first meetup outside of class to celebrate my birthday. We are starting to learn our favorite hangouts for meals between classes and supporting each other as we continue to find our place here.

My favorite part of living here so far is how easy it is to discover new places. I can ride my bicycle alongside the river to other parts of the city. I personally love visiting museums and going secondhand shopping, so exploring and getting lost is usually where I find the most interesting places."

Applications for the 2027 Scholarships are now open until Thursday 11 June 2026 for Research Student & Undergraduate Student. See all the details on the Embassy of Japan website.
