Today was the start of some improvements on the summit of Mount Cavendish, where contractors are working on digging out and making some accessibility steps, to help guests get down onto the reserve.

We look forward to additional works over the coming months, stay tuned to our updates as improvements continue.

Golden hour magic at the summit.

As the sun slips below the horizon, the Christchurch Gondola transforms into something truly unforgettable — a sea of clouds glowing in soft hues of gold, pink, and amber. From above, it feels like you’re standing on the edge of the world.

Whether you’re winding down the day or chasing that perfect photo, there’s no better place to pause, breathe, and take it all in.

Another full-on day on site as we push toward reopening tomorrow!

The maintenance team made great progress at the base station, successfully replacing two deflection sheaves — a critical piece of work to keep everything running smoothly.

Around the base, finishing touches continued with tape removed from freshly repainted warning areas, giving the station a much cleaner and sharper look. Up in the café, signage was updated (with the install team earning their steps for the day on the walk up the hill.

We also installed new tread plate in the café to safely cover wiring and remove any trip hazards, making the space safer for both staff and visitors. To wrap things up, the muddy carpet got a well-deserved deep clean — a satisfying final touch after a big stretch of works.

Everything is now set and ready — we’re looking forward to welcoming you back from 10am tomorrow!

Another big day on site as we head into the final stretch

One of the top station deflection sheaves was successfully replaced — a key piece of work to keep everything running smoothly and safely.

We also completed commissioning of the new air conditioning unit, a great step forward in improving comfort across the building.

The café received a full deep clean, while teams continued painting and general cleaning to freshen up the site following recent works.

All eyes now on tomorrow — the final day of works.

Another busy and productive day across the site today, with a wide range of works completed by the team.

Floors in areas of the Discovery Ride were freshly repainted, lifting both appearance and durability, while Shipleys was on site fine-tuning key elements to keep everything running smoothly.

Up at the summit, the toilets received a full deep clean, and work continued on the cableway emergency brake systems to support ongoing safety and reliability. Installation of the new air conditioning system also progressed, with crews advancing works within the roof space.

In the café, counters were tidied and finished with aluminium edge strips, alongside the installation of two new splashbacks and a new CommBox. Externally, updated safety signage has been installed to improve clarity for guests.

Additional works included painting of barriers, touch-ups to warning lines at the base station, and general site clean-up to keep everything looking sharp.

Great effort from everyone involved to keep progress moving across multiple areas

Another busy and productive day at the Christchurch Gondola 🚡

Today’s focus was installing the new liner onto the bull wheel — a slow, precise, and methodical process that ran smoothly thanks to the team’s attention to detail and expertise.

Alongside this, there’s been great progress across site with ongoing preparation and painting work at both the summit and base stations. Installation of new air conditioning units and ductwork is also continuing to take shape.

We also made the most of a gap between works to remove old equipment before moving into the next phase with the emergency brake works.

To top it off, the team completed an extensive deep clean of the base station toilets — and the results were outstanding.

Plenty more to come as works continue tomorrow

Big day on the mountain today 🚁

We successfully airlifted 2 new transformers (1,050kg each) into place, replacing units dating all the way back to 1936 (1,200kg each!) — right at the helicopter’s lifting limit.

A huge effort by Christchurch Helicopters and the Independent Line Services team, who worked tirelessly to get everything installed and power reconnected by close of business.

We also took the opportunity to fly up the new café outdoor aircon unit (240kg) in the same operation.

Progress like this doesn’t happen without an incredible team — great work all around!
