Last month, Te Ahu Pātiki was delighted to be part of the Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trustd Banks Peninsula Walking Festival once again, sharing this special landscape with a fantastic group of participants.

The walk provided an opportunity not only to experience the beauty of Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū / Banks Peninsula, but also to see firsthand some of the significant storm damage that impacted tracks across the area and ultimately led to the festival being postponed earlier in the year. It was a timely reminder of both the power of nature and the ongoing work required to restore and care for these places.

We always enjoy being part of the festival and value the opportunity to connect people with the landscapes, stories, and conservation efforts that make this area so special.

A huge thank you to the Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust for bringing this wonderful event to life each year, and to everyone who joined us on the walk.

There’s still time to join us this Sunday for Sarah’s on Tap - a fantastic hill walk through one of the Peninsula’s unique restoration landscapes.

This 7km medium-hard walk packs plenty into a relatively short distance, with rewarding views, and the chance to explore an area many people wouldn’t normally access. Expect a proper Peninsula workout with steep pitches, varied terrain, and plenty of fresh autumn air.

Hosted as part of the Banks Peninsula Walking Festival, this is the perfect walk for people who enjoy getting off the beaten track and don’t mind earning the views.

📍 Sunday May 17
⏰ Meet 10:00am at Orton Bradley Park Valley Track carpark
🥾 Approx. 4–6 hours | 7km | Medium–Hard

Kia ora whānau,

Trustees Sarah Wilson, Tracey Ower and Hana Walton joined our kaituitui Sarah Anderson for a powerful day back on the maunga, and the tracks are now OPEN (aside from Faulkner Track)

The landscape has been dramatically reshaped. Streambeds have been scoured clean, opening up areas that were once dense with vegetation, and a new natural terrace has formed below the track. From higher up, you can now see a beautiful stepped waterfall flowing from Tōtara Grove, a view that was completely hidden before.

The tōtara themselves have held strong, and while the scale of the slips is humbling, the maunga is already beginning to settle and heal.

Huge thanks to Tui for the incredible mahi restoring the tracks and putting in drainage to help manage what comes next.

If you’re heading up, expect mud, take care, and take a moment to appreciate just how much this landscape has changed.

Ngā mihi

Help restore Banks Peninsula's beloved trail network!

Support the repair and recovery of your favourite biking, running and walking tracks following the February 2026 storm. With estimated damage costs exceeding $500,000, we need community support to bring these trails back to safe use as quickly as possible.

We've partnered with Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust to open the February 2026 Storm Damage Repair Fund, which is now open for donations.

Your gift will help local organisations repair damaged walking and cycling routes, restore swift and safe public access to the track network, and continue vital maintenance and pest control. Kura Tāwhiti Foundation retains a small percentage to support administration.

Donate now to bring back our tracks!

Great news for Easter weekend 🐣🌿

After weeks of hard work behind the scenes, we’re delighted to share that tracks on Te Ahu Pātiki will be open in time for Easter.

Our team has been putting in a huge effort to assess damage, carry out repairs, and make the tracks safe and enjoyable again, and it’s fantastic to see that work coming together.

A heads up before you head out:
There is still a lot of mud on the tracks, so please come prepared with sturdy footwear and allow extra time. Conditions may be slippery in places.

Please note:
Faulkners Track will remain closed.

As you head out over the long weekend, we encourage you to:
• take care on recently reopened tracks
• respect any signage and closures
• be prepared for muddy conditions
• enjoy being back out on the maunga
A big thank you to everyone involved in getting us to this point , we can’t wait to see people back out exploring Te Ahu Pātiki this Easter.

🌿 Tracks Update –Progress Underway 🌿

There’s some positive news from the maunga…
Great progress is being made on repairing the tracks, with teams working hard to get things back into shape after recent damage.
We’re not quite there yet, but it’s moving in the right direction and we’re hopeful to make an announcement about reopening mid next week.
Thank you for your patience while this important work is underway. We can’t wait to welcome you back out there soon. 💚

New dates, same fun and adventures.
