Alison is one of our amazing volunteer first responders in the Coromandel 🚑

Alison a volunteer Paramedic and has so far given an incredible 26 years of service - bringing with her a lifetime of experience as a nurse, midwife, and First Responder.

As a highly respected and much valued member of the local First Response team. She has mentored and supported countless volunteers, helping them grow from new recruits through to Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics. Her guidance and dedication have played a huge role in building one of the strongest First Response teams in the region.

Congratulations Alison on winning the Bright Star award in our 2026 Time to Shine Volunteering awards.

National Volunteer Week | Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu 💚

This week, we celebrate National Volunteer Week and recognise the incredible volunteers who give their time, skills, and compassion to support communities across Aotearoa.

At Hato Hone St John, our volunteers are at the heart of what we do. From our Ambulance Officers to Youth Leaders, Caring Callers, Community Educators, Event Health Services teams, and the many other volunteers working behind the scenes-each person plays a vital role in helping us care for our communities.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life, but they all share one common goal: to make a difference. Whether it’s responding to an emergency, supporting a young person to grow in confidence, providing companionship to someone who needs it, or educating communities to be prepared, their dedication has a lasting impact every single day.

To every Hato Hone St John volunteer- thank you. Your commitment, kindness, and willingness to serve your communities does not go unnoticed.

Happy Mother's Day! Today we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible duo of Kez and Cuan, a mother-son team who both serve as paramedics 🎉

Kez, often nicknamed "Mama Kez" or "Aunty Kez" by her colleagues, was inspired by her son Cuan’s enthusiasm for the medical field. For the last 17 years, Kez has been on the frontline, training St John Youth cadets and supporting her community with unwavering care and commitment.

After losing her hearing as a teenager, Eva, our passionate paramedic and medical student, embraced New Zealand Sign Language, turning it into a means of connection and understanding.

In her work, she sees firsthand how crucial effective communication is for enhancing patient care 🚑

As we celebrate NZSL week, let’s take a moment to recognise its importance in building a more inclusive Aotearoa. By picking up just a few signs, we can promote inclusivity and strengthen the bonds within our community 💛

Today, Hato Hone St John is proud to stand with our communities in remembrance across the Cambridge area@, with our cadets, youth leaders, ambulance officers, and volunteers involved in ANZAC Day services through marching, supporting ceremonies, and providing event health services across a number of commemorations.

It is a day that holds special meaning for Hato Hone St John. During times of war, Hato Hone St John personnel served alongside military forces, providing first aid, ambulance transport, medical support, and compassionate care to those wounded in conflict. Their courage and dedication helped save countless lives, often in the most difficult of circumstances.

That same spirit of service continues today. Whether on the battlefield then, or in our communities now, the mission remains the same - to care for others when they need it most.

As we remember those who served and those who never returned, we also honour the legacy of service, sacrifice, and humanity that continues to inspire us every day.

At 84, Gael never imagined a quick supermarket visit would turn into a frightening ordeal that would change her life in an instant.

With the sun in her eyes and groceries in both hands as she walked, a slight brush of her heel on the edge of a curb sent her off balance, causing her to fall hard onto the tar seal.
A kind stranger she describes as, “an angel in disguise” rushed to her aid, and an ambulance crew arrived within minutes to help 🚑

At the hospital 🏥 the reality of the fall became clear: a broken hand, a suspected broken arm, two broken ribs on each side, a fractured jaw joint, a cut chin, and a denture that had lodged painfully into her gum.

What followed was a lengthy healing process, with carers, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists helping her regain strength and independence 💛
Gael is sharing her story this to help raise awareness. “Falls happen so quickly,” she says. “Staying active, eating well, and keeping connected really do make a difference.”
