Permanently closed.

Other times by prior arrangement. Nestled in grape country, and only 10 minutes from the airport or the town centre, hidden behind high hedges, lies the private, but nationally acclaimed garden of Upton Oaks. Surrounding the 100 year old Victorian homestead are gardens that have been recognised as a 'Garden of National Significance' as awarded by NZ Gardens Trust. These colourful gardens comprise

of garden rooms, contained within a formal framework of hedges and walls. The much photographed 17th century style Knot Garden is a favourite for visitors. Relax on a park bench where you can take in views of the herbaceous borders and pond. A small olive grove with a winding path leads to large raised vegetable beds and espaliered fruit trees. Blue and white gardens compliment the old cottage at the rear of the property. A must see visit, for all who love the beauty of a romantic garden, that has been much filmed and photographed.

Might not have the big gardens now, but can still have flowers in pots, and with tulips in other pots for the spring.

It's official, we are Sold. A big move ahead in February to a new creative project. Unfortunately the gardens won't be open again in the future, they will be private gardens for the new owners whom we wish all the best to. Until then we will enjoy the last memories on this property.

Sue Monahan was fairly green to gardening in the early 90s. And she couldn't just YouTube it. Thankfully, she had Maggie Barry.

For 35 years Upton Oaks has been our home and workplace. We started out with a run down villa on the outskirts of town with no gardens to speak of, just a lovely old walnut tree. As we started to restore the Villa, we also commenced creating a garden. Its been wonderful to be able to share the garden with so many people over the years but the time has now come that we move on, as we are all just caretakers of any property while we are there. We hope the next owners will fall in love with the area, the villa and gardens. Look out next wednesday 12th October when it goes live with Bayleys Marlborough.

Wow that's a cracker frost this morning, even the daffodils are bowed with the weight of the frost on them.

After more than 20 years of sharing our gardens with so many lovely people from all walks of life, we have decided it's time for a change of direction. So with the end of the season, we have now closed the gardens to the public. Gardening is in the blood, and no doubt I will sometimes post up pics of inspiration and am choosing to now garden for leisure and pleasure, rather than show and pressure. Take more time to smell the flowers and slow up a little. Thank you to all of you who have visited over the years, keep on gardening.
