💛 Another great Business After 5 event tonight, thanks to the fabulous team at PlaceMakers Blenheim.

It was fantastic to meet their local team and learn more about the products and services they offer.

And they certainly didn’t disappoint with the promised "tradie hospitality" – there were plenty of meat skewers and delicious whitebait patties to enjoy!

Thanks for a great evening and for showcasing what makes local business connections so valuable!

What a brilliant day at Future of Work Marlborough yesterday!

We were proud to partner with Marlborough District Council, Marlborough Boys' College and Marlborough Girls' College to deliver this fantastic event, giving young people from across our region the opportunity to explore future career and training pathways.

There are so many people to thank. From our fabulous sponsors, to the generous businesses and organisations who shared their career journeys and workplace experiences, to the tertiary providers showcasing training opportunities, and our incredible team of volunteers who helped make the day run seamlessly. It truly took a village, and we're incredibly grateful to every one of you.

And finally, a very special thank you to our Project Manager Extraordinaire, Kate. Your passion, dedication and countless hours behind the scenes made this event possible. 💛

This morning we had the pleasure of hosting Mayor Nadine Taylor at the Chamber for our May ICIB Business Women's Networking Group.

Her talk of growing up in the 'girls can do anything' era, followed by her 'just get going and do it' mantra resonated with the women in the room who learnt of her journey to become a leader in the community. Her honest account of the challenges and her tips for securing your place, peppered with her natural sense of humour made for a fun and inspiring morning.

A room full of women left the event feeling well more equipped to "land the plane!"

Thanks to ICIB Brokerweb Insurance & Risk Advisory, who are the new local naming partner for this group, to Bianca at Dirt Studio for the gorgeous flowers to dress the room, and Stefanie from G & S Foods Ltd for the wee sample bags for attendees to try at home.

Last month’s Business After 5 with Port Marlborough gave members exclusive behind-the-scenes access not usually available 👀

From a guided tour inside the gates to taking in the full scale from above, it was a rare inside look at one of NZ’s busiest ports.

Connecting Marlborough to the rest of the country, the port supports ferry services, freight, aquaculture, forestry, and the cruise industry. It’s also home to one of NZ’s largest marina networks, keeping the Sounds connected for residents, tourism, and recreation.

A big thanks to Ryan, Gavin, Rhys for sharing your stories and to Connie for facilitating the event.

A great turnout of fabulous wāhine at our BWNG event at Fidelio Cafe & Wine Bar last night.

Thank you to the brilliant Dr Bex Bell from Remix Coaching who spoke of her personal journey into business and how she tames her 'inner critic'.

Her key takeaways for a Mindset Remix:
🌕Make action happen - back yourself
🌕Flip focus - 'Nervous to Service'
🌕Focus on what's going right and the progress you have already made

You can find out more about our new member, Dr Bex, via her website: https://www.remixcoaching.co.nz/ or check out her book: Inner Critic to Inner Coach (via Upstart Press).

Thank you to Neil and the team from the newly reopened Fidelio Cafe and Wine Bar for hosting us all, and providing delicious nibbles.

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - Waitohi Ferry Redevelopment

The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce acknowledges the Statement of Proposal unanimously approved by Council last week, initiating consultation on funding options for Port Marlborough’s share of the Waitohi Ferry Redevelopment Project.

From a business perspective, this is a critical infrastructure decision for our region. Marlborough’s economic strength relies heavily on efficient and reliable inter-island connections to support freight, supply chains, tourism, and day-to-day business operations.

The Chamber supports 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟏 as outlined in the proposal. Providing financing certainty enables Port Marlborough to participate in the redevelopment and helps secure the long-term future of ferry operations in Picton. This level of certainty is essential for business confidence, investment, and regional growth.

In addition, we see clear value in the opportunities this project can provide for local contractors and suppliers to be involved, helping to retain and circulate economic benefits within the Marlborough region.

We also acknowledge that the proposed funding approach does not place a direct burden on ratepayers, with any borrowing to be repaid by Port Marlborough through its operations.

This is a significant decision with long-term implications, and we strongly encourage our members and the wider business community to make their own submission as part of the consultation process.

The Ferry Consultation Document and submission details can be found here:
https://haveyoursay.marlborough.govt.nz/corporate-services/ferry-redevelopment-financing/

To support this, the Chamber will provide submission templates that can be tailored to reflect individual business views. Please reach out to [email protected] for assistance.

Kylie caught up with Marlborough Mayor Nadine Taylor last week for one of our regular Chamber–Council check-ins.

With the ongoing global fuel situation, it was a good opportunity to talk about how important it is for our region and our business community to be thinking about preparedness. While there’s still a lot of uncertainty, staying connected and sharing information helps ensure Marlborough is ready to respond if needed.

We really value these regular catch ups and the opportunity to make sure the perspectives of local businesses are heard.

☕It was a pleasure to welcome Margaret and Matilde to our Chamber Coffee Catch Up this morning, where they shared insights into the important work of the Marlborough Multicultural Centre in supporting newcomers to our region.

Pictured here with Chamber Chairperson Caro, these two fantastic wāhine spoke about how the Centre supports migrants and refugees settling in Marlborough, and the opportunities this creates for local businesses. Employing people from diverse backgrounds not only strengthens our workforce and economy, it also brings cultural richness and new perspectives that help our region thrive.

If you want to know more, attend one of their regular morning tea sessions to meet their team.

😎 Back in the office after a beautiful morning in Picton celebrating the arrival of Kaiaua into Port Marlborough's marine fleet.

The event began with a warm welcome, before everyone’s attention turned to the harbour for a demonstration of Kaiaua in action. The new tug delivered an impressive display of manoeuvrability, showing off the capability that comes with a modern Azimuth Stern Drive vessel. At around 23 metres long and delivering roughly 70 tonnes of bollard pull, it is designed to safely assist the large ferries, cruise ships and cargo vessels moving through Picton Harbour.

Following waiata from Picton School | Te Kura o Waitohi, Te Ātiawa o Te Waka-a-Māui shared the significance of the name Kaiaua, which they gifted to the vessel. The new tug will work alongside sister tug Kaiana, together forming one of the newest towage fleets in New Zealand. Port Marlborough CE Rhys Welbourn also acknowledged the many people behind the scenes whose work helped bring the project to life.

A great morning recognising the people, partnerships and investment that keep our harbour operating safely and efficiently for the benefit of the region. ⚓
