🟡 Encouraging progress in the fight against the yellow-legged hornet

After seven months of intensive biosecurity operations on Auckland's North Shore, there have been no confirmed sightings of yellow-legged hornets since early April. This is an encouraging sign and gives cautious optimism that eradication remains within reach.

Since the pest was first detected last year, response teams have:
• Removed 77 queens and 132 nests
• Checked traps more than 56,000 times
• Surveyed over 8,300 properties
• Deployed almost 12,000 bait stations
• Investigated more than 17,800 public reports

This progress is thanks to the efforts of biosecurity staff, scientists, beekeepers, international experts and thousands of Aucklanders who have supported the response.

While intensive field operations have scaled back for winter, surveillance continues. Mated queens can hibernate under bark, leaf litter and woodpiles before emerging in spring to establish new colonies.

📸 If you see a suspected yellow-legged hornet or nest, safely take a photo and report it:
• Online: report.mpi.govt.nz
• Phone: 0800 80 99 66

Thank you to everyone who has played a part in this important effort to protect Auckland's environment, biodiversity and beekeeping industry.

You may notice waka ama temporarily stored at Little Shoal Bay Reserve over the coming months.

The waka belong to Aratika Water Sports Club and have been temporarily relocated while Auckland Council upgrades the Birkenhead Wharf boat ramp, where the club is normally based.

The temporary arrangement will help ensure the club can continue providing opportunities for people to get active on the water and enjoy our harbour while the boat ramp is unavailable.

The waka storage has been approved for a limited period and is expected to remain in place until the upgrade works are completed. Public access to Little Shoal Bay Reserve will continue during this time.
