Surviving not just the virus, but the loss of friends, lovers, and an entire generation, you continued to show up, fight, and keep each other alive.

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial honours the lives lost to AIDS and the people who have fought — and continue to fight — for those living with and affected by HIV.

Since 1983, communities around the world have gathered in solidarity.

And so have we in Tāmaki Makaurau.

⬇Locally-acquired infections dropped 45% from the 2010 baseline, but…

We’re well short of the 90% reduction target by 2030.

🏳️‍🌈Takatāpui, gay, bi & other men who have s*x with men (MSM) remain the most affected.

The decline is mostly among European MSM. For Māori/Pasifika and Asian MSM numbers have stayed the same or increased.

👬MSM

74% of all locally-acquired HIV
60% of all diagnoses

Of those,
44% were Māori/Pasifika
27% were Asian

💔There were 9 AIDS diagnoses
100% were men
55% were Māori/Pasifika

🌏137 people already diagnosed overseas were also notified — 86% already undetectable.

Culturally appropriate prevention, testing, and treatment for ALL communities is crucial!
