Recreate NZ Life-changing experiences for youth with disabilities

12/06/2026

At Recreate NZ, our Moxie Employment programme is breaking down barriers to employment for people with disabilities by creating pathways into real, permanent part-time jobs.

What makes Moxie different? Our team already knows the young people we support through their participation in other Recreate programmes. This allows us to understand their strengths, aspirations and support needs, and confidently connect them with employers who share our values and commitment to inclusion.

Moxie is built on genuine relationships, empowering disabled employees to thrive while providing employers with the tools, guidance and ongoing support needed to create inclusive, high-performing workplaces.

With courage, determination and a whole lot of moxie, we're helping young people build confidence, gain independence and achieve meaningful employment outcomes. Together, we're creating workplaces where everyone belongs.

With many thanks to Jason Viljoen from Accor Hotels, Rob Byrne from TMNZ, Catherine Watkins at Compass Group, Josephine McLeay at Recreate NZ and Luke Burrows at Wiseboys for advocating and speaking on Moxie Employment.

And thank you to our generous funders of Moxie Employment including IHC New Zealand Foundation, Spectrum Foundation, Simplicity, Christchurch City Council , and Hillier Bequest in the Bay of Plenty.

Last month, we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all our Youth Board representatives come together in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland for our Leadership Training Weekend. This consisted of people flying up from Christchurch and Wellington, and more travelling from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty!

These four days consisted of relevant and engaging workshops, including having Deb from Suntory Oceania lead our group through role modelling, life-journaling and self-reflection. We also loved having the Interact Disability Arts Trust lead us through our rights as individuals.

The Youth Board also joined Tāmaki Estuary Protection Society (TEPS) for an environmental clean-up, as a chance to put leadership into action and give back to the community!

Alice Sampson, Youth Board member from the Bay of Plenty, found the Leadership Getaway truly rewarding. "Having the experience on the Youth Board is challenging but is good to be able to help out our region and give back. It was fun to learn something different about the environment and volunteer by picking up rubbish," says Alice. "Making new friends on the Youth Board has been one of my favourite parts, it was cool to catch up on the weekend and talk about what we’ve been up to in our regions for the past year."

Joseph Blake from the Waikato enjoyed learning what being a leader looks like. "What I learned about leadership is to be one of them and hear other leader's ideas and what we can do as a team moving forward," says Joseph. "We all want to be our own leader: to have a voice, to share and to listen to each other".

Gabrielle Salmon from Auckland loved connecting with others from around the country. " It was great to see everyone there," says Gabrielle. " I had a blast; it was fantastic weekend."

Amy Hyde has been a part of Recreate in Christchurch for many years now, and she loves these opportunities to learn and upskill. "During the weekend we had Deb come in to do a leadership and life journey workshop, we got to share our life journey with each other," says Amy. "We also had Acting 2 Advocate present and they did some skits about Human Rights and it taught us how we can stand up for yourself and who we can go to if we feel like we can't. I thought this was really good and useful to have those skills."

Deb from Suntory Oceania was delighted to present a workshop for our Youth Board, and we are so thankful for Deb for providing valuable insights from her experience. "As part of our community partnership with Recreate NZ, I had the opportunity to support their Youth Leadership camp, delivering a session on leadership and the importance of role modelling," says Deb. "Spending time with the Youth Board members was incredible. I walked away feeling genuinely humbled by this impressive group of young people, who want to be seen for so much more than their disability. Their openness, insight and passion for making a positive impact in their communities also prompted me to reflect on my own approach to leadership and role modelling."

Thank you to everyone who made this very special leadership opportunity possible, and to Suntory Oceania for supporting our Youth Board and their leadership development.

This special Getaway happened to coincide with the World Surf League New Zealand Pro, which was so fun being amongst all the action! We also checked out the Raglan & District Museum / Te Whare Taonga o Whaingaroa and Bridal Veil Falls.

Thanks Raglan for your warm hospitality!

❄❄❄ Term 3 / Winter programmes go live this Saturday 23rd May at 10am ❄❄❄

Our Programme Coordination team has been busy planning our Winter programmes and we have some exciting things coming. We have weekend trips to Taupō, Waihi, and Paihia, to name a few, and a ziplining Outdoor Adventure in the Coromandel! If you love a day of relaxation, keep an eye out for our Mindfulness Morning Urban and Self-Care Day. For our sports lovers, we have plenty of bowling and golf programmes, and an opportunity to head to Eden Park to watch the Black Ferns!

Term 3 also means it is time for two of our most exciting programmes – Recreate’s Got Talent and the National Ball! You don’t want to miss these.

We hope you love our Term 3 programmes.

In the Recreate NZ news this week! Term 3 / Winter programmes go live next Saturday, 23rd May!

In staffing news, we are so happy for Lily as she steps away for a time on maternity leave. And we warmly welcome Hannah as Lead Programme Coordinator in Auckland, and Ruby Cross to the Christchurch team as Programme Coordinator!

And finally, a huge thank you to Auda, Karyn and Margaret for being a part of our video series on our impact!

Our Ask

“A donation towards Recreate is a donation to opening up and widening the lives of these kids. I think for people who are looking to support, I think you’ve got to look beyond what a financial contribution is. I want you to look at what it does to your life, what it opens up in your life, what it brings into your life. So I encourage you to really think beyond the monetary value, to look beyond what it brings into your life.”

Our Team

“You carry something that goes beyond what it is a job, it’s something that comes from here, and to me that’s really important. And I think the children themselves, the kids that come to Recreate recognise it. They wouldn’t be as free I don’t think, as what they are, if they didn’t recognise that they are valued, they are looked upon with caring and with welcome.”
