Banganga Irrigation Management Division, Taulihawa, Kapilvastu

This is the only storage type irrigation system extending to 145 ha with a capacity of 4.44 MCM. The major source is Banganga River which originates from the Churiya ranges, which is likely to be perennial type river with a catchment area of 350 sq km. The gross command area is 6350 ha. r canal, 4.75 km long, convey water from head regulator to the Reservoir, the canal off takes perpendicular to the river (parallel to the dam axis) and after 400 m it turns to the south and runs north – south along the settlement of Banganga Municipality. Total three minors canal off takes from the Feeder canal – Kushma and Harnampur minors at east and the Jahadi minor at west. Total two falls were observed. There are total 6 Village road bridge (VRB). The main canal starts from the southern boundary of the reservoir and extends from north to south to a length of 20.75km up to the Nepal – India border. Maximum designed discharge of the canal is 5.67 cumecs with bed width 6.1 m at the initial portion. The lands at left and right of the canal are directly irrigated by the MCs that off takes directly from the main canal. Besides the MCs, the main canal distributes water to the Branch and the distributaries. All the branches irrigate the land at the east of the main canal. Of the 6 distributaries, 4 distributaries irrigate the eastern land and 2 at the western land of the main canal. Whole the length of the canal, except very few linings constructed recently is earthen.
