Pustakalaya is an initiative by undergraduates at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University which aims to help students in Nepal to reach one step closer in building their lives through the power of education.

We successfully delivered a course book to 30 students at Khumjung Secondary School, situated at an elevation of 3,750 meters above sea level in Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality-4, within the challenging terrain of Sagarmatha National Park. Overcoming significant infrastructural barriers and resource limitations, it took us nearly a month to reach this remote location, highlighting the considerable challenges associated with providing support to such distant areas. This experience underscores the crucial need for decentralizing resources to ensure equitable access, especially in hard-to-reach regions.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who supported this initiative. With your help, students preparing for the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) at Khumjung Secondary School now have access to essential resources, bridging gaps caused by geographical isolation and limited infrastructure.

With a background in policy research and a degree from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Rashi is dedicated to making a positive impact.

How did you celebrate World Book Day?

We had a lovely time engaging with enthusiastic children through our Book Lovers Meet. As always, the children never fail to amaze us with their energy and zeal. After the surge of the pandemic, they had very little exposure to such activities, therefore, we could feel the excitement and happiness that was radiating through them.

We would like to thank Leo Club of Kathmandu, Kohinoor and Lalitpur Sports Training Center for contributing their expertise and collaboration to make this event successful. We had incorporated various book reading/reviewing sessions mainly targeted for grade 4-5 students.

Also, this event would not have taken place if it weren’t for the donation of help of various NGOs and individuals who wanted to pass on their valuable books to us. Thank you to each one of you. We hope for your continued love and support in the future events to come.

On the auspicious day of 23rd April, The Learner’s Room, in collaboration with the Lalitpur Sports Association, is organizing an event called the “Young Learner’s: A booklover’s meet” aimed towards children from 8-13 years old. Through this event, we want to spread the importance of reading culture among young children. The World Book Day is a remarkable day for us to remind the crucial role that books play in our life and the transformation it can bring in our lives. The children of today are going to the leaders of the future; therefore, it is our responsibility to guide them into the beautiful world of books where their creativity knows no bound of limitation. Help us build a safe present for the children, so that they can secure our future. Let’s create an environment the children rightfully deserve

20th December (Pictures are in sequential order according to the dates)

8 members from the learner’s Room and our extremely creative ) depart from Kathmandu with their heart heavy with aspiration, hope and gratitude towards Shree Saraswoti Madhyamik Bidhyalaya. We were there to monitor and assess the condition of Learner’s Room for its sustainable and effective operation.

Our morning was spent getting to know each other and seeing the beautiful Himalayas with its snow-capped mountain following us. With each village we passed, the cold had us shivering and our breath condensed into v***r for the first time this winter.
We reached around 3 PM and started arranging the library immediately in contrast to our plan which was to rest. Maybe the excitement had us all energized.

21st December

We conduct a two-hour long meeting with the principal, Accountant, Librarian and two representatives from the school and reach towards a conclusion for the sustainable operation of the library. We also conducted interactive sessions focusing on the evaluation of the library to create a reading culture amongst the students. The students surprised is with their creativity and interaction.

22nd December

After an interactive session with the students, we are prepared to hand over the library to the school. The school had also agreed to host a farewell program for us, so when it was 2:30 pm, the bell rang for students to pack their bags and get ready for the program. Their excitement spoke through their eyes as they got to listen and her soulful music; they were truly inspired by her music.

Later, as the program progressed, the mayor of Tanahun also joined with officials of the village ward. We were also able to provide need-based scholarship to 7 students upon discussion with the school.

23rd December

We packed our bags and left Tanahun at around 9 AM. As we made our way back home, the beautiful village of Tahahun had its way of bidding goodbye by clearing itself from the thick fog that had covered it in the previous days.

Dear Everyone,

We are a bit emotionally overwhelmed to present you the latest pictures of our library. We feel overwhelmed because, as you can see in the very first picture; there was nothing. We had a vision to change this room into something meaningful, something impactful: A learner’s room ✨. But we were aware of the fact that it was difficult, or even impossible. Miles away from Nepal, we never thought that we could ever make this library project happen. This is why we stress on the fact that it is ‘our’ library. YOU ✨have helped us to turn our VISION ✨into REALITY✨. Seeing the students inside the library using materials that YOU✨ have donated, makes us want to do more for them. This is why we need your support once again. To reach many students, to touch their lives and to tell them that we care❤️

We cannot start without thanking each one of you for being extremely patient and supportive for our first phase of “Building Nation through Building Libraries”, partnered with Leo Club Kathmandu, Kohinoor and The Book Club. As the physical classes in Nepal have started in full swing, we think that it is the perfect time for us to begin our second phase: Learner’s Room: A Path to wisdom in collaboration with Leo Club Kathmandu, Kohinoor.

For our second phase, there are a few things that will be on top of our agenda. As we have already completed furnishing of our library and installing books, we now move forward towards the systematic operation of the library. For this we will be,

1. Training our Librarian on how to operate the lending and borrowing of books
2. Conducting evaluation on the impact of our library
3. Conducting book reading sessions and activities to increase active participation from the students
4. Receiving more books, stationery for donation
5. Purchasing Nepali books for +2 (As per the request from the school)
6. Purchasing Stationery and materials that aid the students to study
7. Helping students who are reported to have weak financial situation or have disabilities
8. Collecting testimonies from students about their experiences and their expectations from the library.

We are planning and working hard to complete our agenda for our second phase and have set the date to visit the school on the 20th of December. We promise that we will stand true to your support and expectations and carry our activities with utmost sincerity and dedication with the lessons learned from our first phase.

We have been busy planning for the second phase and it gives us immense happiness to announce that Pustakalaya APU team with the Leo Club of Kathmandu, Kohinoor will visit Shree Shiva Saraswoti Higher Secondary School this December on the 20th. It is incumbent upon us to rectify and improve the quality of our service and implement our learnings from the 1st phase.

We have partnered with the Leo Club of Kathmandu, Kohinoor, a non-governmental organization led by the enthusiastic youth of today to bring about important changes in our society.
