A career in policing is becoming an increasingly sought-after path for young women in Nepal.

With a national target of 33% women in the police force, encouraging progress is underway as more young women are shaping a more inclusive and responsive system for all.

The UNOPS together with UK in Nepal is supporting efforts to expand opportunities for women in policing—through outreach, training and inclusive approaches that help break barriers and ensure more women can join and thrive in the force.

Protection starts with people!

Sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment harm lives, silence voices, and break trust especially for women and girls. Addressing it means building systems that listen, respond, and protect.

This week, the United Nations Nepal together with Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizen - Nepal convened senior government leaders to advance survivor-centered approaches for Protection From Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH)- moving from commitment to action across government institutions. The workshop marks a critical step in embedding PSEAH principles into systems, procedures, and behaviors across government mechanisms.

Key outcomes of the workshop included stronger collaboration between the Government of Nepal and the UN system, a firm commitment to survivor-centered approaches, and reinforcing principles of dignity, accountability, and zero tolerance for across all sectors.

Last week, we celebrated Hanaa Singer-Hamdy, the UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal, for her leadership, collaboration, and strong advocacy for the rights and empowerment of all women and girls in Nepal.

While she was leading the UN Country Team in Nepal, she was a committed champion of the UN’s gender equality commitments. UN Women is proud to have worked with her and her leadership to strengthen coordination, partnerships, and collective action across the UN system, government, development community, and international platforms.

UN Women Nepal, as the UN entity mandated to lead, coordinate, and promote accountability on women’s empowerment and gender equality, thanks her for her leadership, partnership, and continued support, and wishes her success in the journey ahead.

When women are absent from decision-making tables, it’s not due to a lack of interest,
It’s because of the structural barriers.

❗ 37.6% couldn’t attend meetings because of household duties.
❗ 33.8% were never even informed.
Let’s break these barriers so all women can be heard where it matters.

This is a test of the world’s conscience.

Will we defend women and girls - or fail them?
Will we confront injustice - or tolerate it?
Will we act - or become complicit?

No justice means no justice at all.

With support from the EU-UN Joint Programme, Empowered Women, Prosperous Nepal (EWPN), 19,090 women between 2023–2025 have gained the skills, confidence, tools, and networks needed to build sustainable livelihoods and shape their own futures.

When women thrive economically, families prosper, communities grow, and equality moves forward.
