JICA Enhances Support for Nagdhunga Tunnel with Additional Loan of JPY 5.7 billion.

On June 3, 2026, JICA signed an additional ODA Loan of JPY 5.7 billion for the Nagdhunga Tunnel Construction Project, bringing total support to over JPY 22 billion. The project aims to improve connectivity between Kathmandu and key regions of Nepal by easing congestion at the Nagdhunga Pass.

Now in its final phase, the tunnel has achieved about 99% physical progress and is expected to open in July 2026. The 2.68 km tunnel will significantly transform regional travel and strengthen economic connectivity.

Beyond infrastructure, the project introduces advanced tunneling technology, supporting resilient and sustainable development.

Building on successful collaborations like the BP Highway and Kathmandu-Bhaktapur Road, the Nagdhunga Tunnel is set to become a landmark in Nepal’s modern infrastructure development , reflecting Japan’s continued commitment to Nepal’s infrastructure growth.

JICA-Supported Initiative Strengthens Learning Support in Sindhupalchowk.

Diyo Forum Japan has been implementing the “Support for students behind in learning and their guardians” Project under the JICA Donation Fund from April to July in the Thokarpa and Sunkoshi of Sindhupalchowk.

This project focuses on children who face difficulties in learning. Through consistent home visits and guardians’ meetings, the initiative encourages children to develop daily study habits, such as writing diaries and practicing multiplication tables. Guardians are also guided to motivate their children.

Mr. Yoshio Handa, Representative of Diyo Forum Japan, has been contributing to this project. He is a former Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) in Nepal (AD 1991) specializing in science and mathematics. Since then, he has been supporting students and guardians, and after retiring as high school principal in Japan, now he is full swing to support.

Going forward, the project continues to strengthen collaboration with local schools and communities to create a supportive learning environment where children can improve their educational development.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road was held on 25 May 2026. The project, supported through a Japanese grant of up to 2.8 billion Yen (around NPR 2.3 billion), aims to restore and strengthen flood-damaged sections of Sindhuli Road Section IV, which was heavily impacted by rainfall in September 2024.

The initiative focuses on improving road safety, widening vulnerable stretches, and enhancing resilience against future disasters.

The Sindhuli Road, a key 160 km highway connecting Kathmandu to the Terai, has significantly reduced travel time and contributed to regional economic growth since its completion in 2015.

The rehabilitation project underscores the continued partnership between the Government of Nepal and the Government of Japan in building resilient infrastructure and promoting sustainable development.

The project is expected to be completed by December 31, 2027.

Building a Secure Future for Older People Care in Nepal.

The “Establishment of the Older People Care System for Coming Ageing Society in Nepal” (JICA Partnership Program) successfully concluded after its implementation from October 2024 to May 2026 in Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Namobuddha Municipality. In collaboration with Hokkaido’s Nayoro City Social Welfare Institution , the project addressed Nepal’s growing need for quality elderly care.

At the final report meeting, key achievements were shared, including insights from surveys on older persons’ living conditions and impactful training programs for care workers, caregivers, and Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs).

Ms. Apsara Dhital, FCHV from Ward No. 7, regularly visits Ms. Ishwori Khanal (70 yrs), to monitor her health and provide information on nutrition, health camps, and overall well-being. Although Ms. Khanal lives alone, she feels supported and happy due to these consistent home visits. With guidance from the FCHV, Ms. Khanal has maintained good health and actively takes care of her kitchen garden.

A standout feature of the project was its culturally sensitive approach—adapting Japan’s expertise to fit Nepal’s social context for sustainable impact.

JICA remains committed to strengthening partnerships and supporting Nepal in building a compassionate, future-ready elderly care system.

सुश्री अजुमी फुकुशिमाले कक्षा ३ का विद्यार्थीलाइ गणित, कक्षा २ का विद्यार्थीलाइ अंग्रेजी पढाउनुहुन्छ, साथै UKG र LKG का बालबालिकाकालाइ लागि गणित र अंग्रेजी विषय पढाउनु हुन्छ । कक्षाकोठाको शिक्षणका अतिरिक्त, उहाँ कक्षाकोठा गुणस्तर सुधार कार्यक्रम (Classroom Quality Improvement Program) मा पनि योगदान दिनुहुन्छ, जसमा समग्र सिकाइ वातावरण सुधार गर्ने लक्ष्य राखिएको छ।

उहाँको मुख्य उद्देश्य विद्यार्थीहरूको प्रेरणा र सिकाइ सशक्त बनाउनु हो, जसका लागि शिक्षक-नेतृत्वमा आधारित दिगो सिकाइ प्रणाली निर्माण गर्ने लक्ष्य छ। उहाँले अरूलाई सम्मान गर्ने, आत्मअनुशासन अपनाउने, र जीवनभर विद्यार्थीहरूलाइ सिक्ने बानी विकास गर्ने हो, जसले उनीहरूको समग्र विकासमा सहयोग पुर्‍याउनेछ।

Ms. Azumi Fukushima teaches Mathematics to Grade 3, English to Grade 2, and conducts integrated Math and English activities for UKG and LKG students. Alongside classroom teaching, she contributes to the Classroom Quality Improvement Program, focusing on enhancing the overall learning environment.

Her core goal is to strengthen students’ motivation and learning retention by building a sustainable, teacher-led learning system. She aims to nurture students who respect others, practice self-discipline, and develop habits of lifelong learning, ultimately supporting their holistic growth.

Driving Sustainable Growth in Nepal.

In December 2022, JICA committed USD 10 million to Dolma Impact Fund II, a private equity fund managed by Dolma Fund Management. The fund is designed to generate sustainable private sector development and stimulate further Foreign Direct Investment into Nepal. This investment is currently fueling Nepal’s growth across key sectors—healthcare, digital innovation, renewable energy, food processing industries, mobility services and few projects are under approval process.

By supporting impactful businesses, the initiative is helping to create jobs, strengthen industries, advance food security, and expand clean energy solutions across the country.

Recently, Investment Advisory Committee (IAC) members from Japan visited Nepal to reflect on shared progress and discuss the road ahead for impact investing in Nepal.

JICA remains committed to advancing Nepal’s investment climate, industrial development, and sustainable future through strategic partnerships.

From Farm to Market: Growing Green Prosperity in Panchkhal .

The JICA Partnership Program’s (JPP) “Fresh Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Vegetable Production and Market Promotion Program” by Love Green Japan continues to transform agriculture in Panchkhal, Kavre. From May 8–9, 2026, a vibrant agricultural fair organized by Panchkhal Municipality showcased this success, where a large volume of IPM-grown vegetables was sold, drawing strong community and market interest.

By promoting eco-friendly IPM practices, the project has strengthened the entire value chain—from production to marketing. Farmers are now producing based on market demand, improving sorting, packaging, and overall product quality. Expanded market access, including distribution to Kathmandu, has increased sales opportunities and positioned IPM produce as safe, high-value goods. This has boosted farmer incomes and motivation.

The fair further reinforced farmers’ confidence and market connections. Built on trust and collaboration, this project stands as a strong example of sustainable agriculture and community-driven economic growth.

सुश्री सकाई ले महिलाहरूका समूहहरूमा जैविक खेतीलाई सक्रिय रूपमा प्रवर्द्धन गर्दै उनीहरूलाई दिगो कृषि अभ्यासहरूमा सक्षम बनाउँदैछिन्।

उनले खाद्य फोहोरबाट कम्पोस्ट बनाउने तरिका सिकाउने, प्रभावकारी कीट व्यवस्थापन विधिहरू परिचय गराउने, र माटोको गुणस्तरलाई प्राकृतिक रूपमा सुधार गर्न किसानहरूलाई सहयोग गर्ने गर्दछिन ।

उनी जैविक खेतीसम्बन्धी शैक्षिक भिडियोहरू पनि तयार पार्छिन् जसले व्यावहारिक ज्ञानलाई समुदायसम्म अझ पहुँचयोग्य बनाउन मद्दत पुर्‍याउँछ।

Ms. Sakai actively promotes organic farming among women’s groups, empowering them with sustainable agricultural practices.

Her work includes teaching food waste composting techniques, introducing effective ‑pest management‑ methods, and supporting farmers in improving soil health naturally. She also develops and produces educational videos on organic farming, helping make practical knowledge more accessible to communities.

उहाँका गतिविधिहरू बोच्चियाको शिक्षण र सहभागिता विस्तार, नयाँ प्रशिक्षकहरूको तालिम, तथा अपाङ्गताप्रति समाजमा व्यापक समझदारी र सकारात्मक धारणा विकास गर्न केन्द्रित छन्।

Through her efforts, she helps create more accessible and inclusive communities where children and adults—both with and without disabilities—can play, learn, and grow together.

JICA Project for Improving Continuum of Care for Mothers and Children through the utilization of MCH Handbook (The Nepal MCHHB Project) is the technical cooperation project jointly implemented by the Ministry of Health and Population and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). We are calling for applications for data collectors for a survey in Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces.
