Survey Department(SD) under the Ministry of Land Reform and Management(MoLIM) was established to undertake national surveying and mapping activities of Nepal.The present status of the department is now considered as the National Mapping Organization(NMO) of Nepal.

The portal created by the Survey Department of Nepal (SDN)facilitates searching and finding geospatial data and associated information services in Nepal. The main mission of this portion is to promote geospatial data sharing in the country. This is also an initiative to create a Metadata and Clearing House Services in Nepal.

As being one of the oldest departments in Nepal, the Survey Department, which was established in 1957 to embark on national surveying and mapping activities within the country. It is also a coordinating institution established as the National Mapping Organization (NMA) of Nepal that prepare the various types of maps, advises the government for preparation and updating its national mapping policy and the related works, avoid duplication of mapping work, improve the quality of map related finished products and coordinating intergovernmental and cordial ties with international surveying and mapping organizations.

Survey Department of Nepal (SDN) has started its own initiative to verify the existing orthometric height of Mt. Everest ( Sagarmatha). This is a historic basic first order control monument, and the base measurement had made to establish a best suite projection system for Nepal. The Everest Spheroid-1830 is the accepted spheroid, and Modified Universal Transverse Mercator( Central Meridian for the zone of 3° of longitude with scale factor of 0.9999) is the adopted projection system in Nepal (1970).
