Night watching Nepal
There are many mammals, birds, amphibians, insects and plants who active during the night. They start active after sunset and sleep during the daytime.
Nocturnal movement of birds, mammals, insects, amphibians and plants may it is to avoid predators or to avoid sun. Migratory birds will take advantage of more stable atmosphere of night. Nocturnal movements in details are still mysterious & there is still much to learn about it. We are not yet quiet sure as to why many animals and plants active at night. We know that they do.
Birding Himalaya Pvt. Ltd organizes Night watching program in Kathmandu and other parts of the country. Night Watching is fun for most night watchers of any level of expertise. As night watchers develop their skills this wonderful hobby can be put to good use. During night watching there is not much else to do but simply you can enjoy it.
There are two ways to do Night Watching one is by sight the other is by sound.
Some animals only male give a call to attract opposite s*x and announce their presence and aid in identification. The observation and identification of small bats in the flight is very difficult, but as we know, challenging ourselves is the way to grow as a Night Watchers.
In Nepal there are two types of Night Watching Program, one is regular which we can do all round the year and the other is seasonal.
Bats, Owls, Night Heron watching can do regular and Nightjars, Cuckoos, common snipe, waterfowls during the migration both fall and spring, Night flowering Jasmine, firefly, Moth, Cricket watching program depending on season.
Each of these programs will result in a wealth of new knowledge and experience. A little knowledge of the current weather conditions and some basic understanding of nocturnal ecology we can gain more. Its night and dark so our usual sight based night watching is limited. Night watching by full moon is easy to sight & great activity for Night Watchers.
