«Hats no longer seem to be a structural component of everyday dress in the way they once were. They often operate within a narrow formal vocabulary, repeating familiar silhouettes rather than proposing new ones. To wear a hat that departs from convention today can almost feel excessive and can carry a certain level of self-consciousness that is rare to witness.” (…)
(…) “It is from this curiosity that Stephen Jones’ work emerges and remains amongst the most original and widely recognised in contemporary millinery. Since the early 1980s, Jones has worked alongside designers and houses that have defined contemporary fashion, including Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Comme des Garçons, and Dior, while maintaining his own house, Stephen Jones Millinery, in London. His name has become synonymous with the practice itself and is frequently cited as the figure who reintroduced wit and theatricality to the form. When reaching out to Stephen Jones, we wanted to reflect on the role of millinery today and what hats mean within the contemporary cultural landscape. The conversation that follows touches on how that imagination continues to unfold.” (…)
