Internationalista

Internationalista Internationalista is a political organisation of students at the University of Oslo, formed by international students and internationally minded people.

Internationalista has one representative in the student parliament at UiO. We are also present in the student parliament's International Committee. We believe that all students should be able to participate in all learning, democratic, social and governance activities. Their gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, language, nationality or any other individual characteristic should never be an

obstacle to participation. With more than 10% of UiO students being international and currently no international representative in the student parliament, we feel that too many students are being left out of the loop and without a voice. We fight for:

-Inclusion of international students in decision making processes.
-Tearing down language barriers: universal availability of Norwegian language courses for international students and more accessible information in English.
-More opportunities to study abroad and more internationalized curricula
-No introduction of tuition fees for non-EU students. With Internasjonalista you vote for a group of engaged and highly motivated students who really want to make a difference. Help us make this university a better place!

Education is a right, not a commodity. The higher education sector globally is currently heavily underfinanced. In some places, this results in high student fees and unsatisfying loan schemes for students.

The Student Parliament at UiO believes that the Norwegian government must invest more in higher education within Norwegian development policy as a part of promoting academic freedom and equal access to higher education, regardless of socio-economic background, globally.

We in Internationalista wholeheartedly support the Student Parliament's efforts to promote SAIH and Norsk studentorganisasjon's University Inc. program. Interested in learning more? Check out their page at University Inc.

Yesterday, Inter Universitas ran a follow-up article to its groundbreaking story on alleged occurrences of exploitation of international students in Oslo, allegations that our representative in Studentparlamentet ved Universitetet i Oslo, Tyler Barrott, called "deeply troubling". We are thrilled to report that our resolution to ensure that all students get the information they need to safely navigate working life in Norway easily passed in last night's parliament meeting. We would like to thank the other parties for their broad support of our resolution and we look forward to continuing to work diligently with relevant actors at UiO to prevent the exploitation of any student, international or Norwegian, during their time here in Oslo. We have attached the resolution in Norwegian below, along with our own English translation.

We find the allegations made in this story deeply troubling. While we in Internationalista, unfortunately, have little influence in this case itself, we will certainly engage with relevant stakeholders at UiO in the coming weeks to ensure UiO’s international students receive the information they need to safely navigate working life in Norway, including how to alert the Norwegian Labor Authority (Arbeidstilsynet) in the case of poor or illegal working conditions. In this way, both Internationalista and the Student Parliament can continue our proud tradition of working together to prevent the mistreatment of international students, in addition to making Oslo a better place to study for students from around the world. Furthermore, we would like to thank Inter Universitas for their tremendous work in this case and would like to highlight the new section’s importance to Oslo's internationally minded students.

Workers reveal a culture of fear and poor working conditions at one of Oslo's favorite restaurants.

Marianna and Davide answer Gjestelista UiO on the inclusion of minorities in governing student bodies in Universitas. Let's talk about real representation rather than symbolic representation. "We need to start by acknowledging our privileges and stand in solidarity with the struggles of underrepresented groups."

Marianna and Davide attended the Why Oslo event today, a reception at the City Hall of Oslo where students were asked how they could make Oslo a better place for international students. They received many positive and also negative feedback from the students about the city! Many interesting arguments were made and it was said that it would become an annual event. We hope many more international students can attend next year as well! 🇳🇴
