“The work of NHC in Kosovo was highly meaningful and important at a crucial time of her history. NHC stood in solidarity with the people by documenting grave human rights violations, advancing democracy, and supporting an emerging civil society. It is important for me to direct my sincere thanks to all those strongly engaged individuals, both Norwegians and Kosovars, for the massive and important work that was done at the time. The NHC of today builds on their commitment to advance human rights, democracy and accountability in line with the principles of the Helsinki Accords and international law,” said Berit Lindeman.

President Haxhiu has confer NHC the Presidential Medal of Kosovo in recognition of promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo, H.E. Nita Luci, attended today’s solemn ceremony at the Storting marking His Majesty King Haakon VIII’s Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution of Norway.

Held amid the national mourning following the passing of His Majesty King Harald V, the ceremony brought together the Royal Family, the President of the Storting, the Government, Members of Parliament and members of the diplomatic corps.

That the oath is taken before Norway’s Parliament is a meaningful expression of the country’s constitutional tradition and the relationship between the Crown, the Constitution and the people’s representatives.

King Haakon VIII has chosen the motto “Alt for Norge” — “All for Norway”, continuing a tradition of service and continuity at a solemn moment for the Kingdom.

It was an honour to be present at this important moment in Norway’s national life.

Presidentja Haxhiu.

🎬 Kosova on the big screen in Oslo!

This week, two films from Kosova will be presented at two film festivals in Oslo — another exciting sign of the growing strength and recognition of Kosova’s filmmakers and their distinctive visual storytelling.

“Dua”, directed by Blerta Basholli, will be screened as part of Oslo Pix. Set in late-1990s Pristina, the film follows 13-year-old Dua as she comes of age in a time of growing tension and uncertainty. The film premiered this year at Cannes Critics’ Week, where it became the first film from Kosovo selected for the competition. (cineuropa.org) https://www.oslopix.no/no/film/2026/dua

“Five Seasons of My Childhood”, directed by Besim Ugzmajli, will be part of the Oslo Short Film Festival at Sentralen on 26–27 August. Blending documentary and animation, the film turns childhood memories into a deeply personal visual journey. It has already received the Best Documentary Award at the West Nordic International Film Festival. (Weniff Film Festival) https://www.sentralen.no/en/program/oslo-short-film-festival-2026

Two very different films, two distinctive voices — and two more examples of aesthetic ambition and visual storytelling. They bring a distinctive willingness to experiment with form, memory and perspective.

Come and see them in Oslo! 🇽🇰🎬

In Memoriam:
Svein Mønnesland - Professor Emeritus

The passing of Professor Svein Mønnesland is a loss to Norway, to scholarship, and to all of us whose lives and work are connected to the Balkans.

As a scholar of Slavic languages, literature and the cultural history, Professor Mønnesland devoted much of his life to understanding the languages, histories and societies of the region, with particular attention to Bosnia and Herzegovina. His work on Kosovo was marked by historical knowledge, attention to demography and a serious engagement with the political developments that shaped its struggle for equality and freedom.

For Kosova, his scholarship also helped bring attention to the longer history behind its aspirations for freedom. Reflecting on the 1981 demonstrations, he asked: “Why should Kosovo not have the status of a republic …” It was a simple but important question, and one that helped place Kosovo’s political struggle within Norwegian academic and public debate.

He understood that Kosovo’s history could not be reduced to the events of 1998–99. The struggle for political equality had deeper roots. He also understood that solidarity with Kosovo was not only about political sympathy, but about standing up for fundamental rights and human lives when they were at stake.

Scholars will value his insistence on historical context, academic rigour and genuine intellectual engagement. As Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to Norway, I will remember him also personally.

I first met Professor Mønnesland at the Embassy’s very first celebration of Kosovo’s National Day in Oslo in 2023. It was a meaningful occasion and a memorable first encounter with a Norwegian scholar who had spent so much of his life studying and engaging with the history and cultures of our part of Europe.

He did not see the Balkans simply as a field of study. He saw its languages, histories and political struggles as part of the lives of real people.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, students and friends.

May his memory endure through the work of those who continue to study, question and better understand the histories he cared so deeply about.

Strengthening Norway–Kosovo Entrepreneurship Ties

Great meeting with SMB Norge, including its Director, Jørund Rytman, and colleagues Jørn Wad, Morten Reffhaug, Islam Poliku, on boosting business cooperation between Norway and Kosovo.

Norway leads in innovation, tech, green transition and sustainable business. Kosovo offers a young, energetic and entrepreneurial ecosystem with growing opportunities for investment and partnership.

There is strong potential for collaboration—especially in startups, agro-food, digital solutions, energy, and new business ventures.

At the core of it all is entrepreneurship and people-to-people connections. Trust, ideas and direct engagement are what turn opportunities into real success.

As Ambassador of Kosovo to Norway, I will continue working to connect entrepreneurs and strengthen our business links.

More startups. More partnerships
