A Brighter, Greener Future Thanks to Renewables

We are delighted to celebrate that the Scatec ASA 273 MW Grootfontein Solar Power Plant in South Africa has officially begun commercial operation, a major milestone for sustainable energy in our country. With an expected annual output of 700 GWh and a projected reduction of 630,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, this project underscores South Africa’s commitment to a clean and renewable energy transition.
We congratulate Scatec, their partners, and the communities involved, and reaffirm our support for sustainable development and stronger ties between South Africa and Norway.

On 3 December 2025, Ambassador Delores Kotzè participated in a seminar entitled: The future of Multilateralism and the role of the G20: Norway’s role in the G20 and Lessons from the Presidencies of Brazil and South Africa. The event was organised by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI). During the event, Ambassadors and scholars from Brazil and South Africa provided insights regarding their nations G20 presidencies. On the other hand the Norwegian G20 Sherpa, Mr Henrik Harboe, articulated Norway’s perspective as a guest country to both South African and Brazilian G20 presidencies.

The South African Embassy in Oslo embarked on a regional visit to Reykjavik from 4-6 November 2025 to engage with Icelandic authorities and stakeholders such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, University of Iceland, the Icelandic Ocean Cluster and the Iceland aquaculture company, Matorka. During the visit Ambassador met with the Rector of the University of Iceland, Dr Silja Bara Omarsdottir to discuss research collaborations, bilateral partnerships, student and staff exchange opportunities between the UI and South African universities. The Ambassador also had an opportunity to visit UI's Innovation centre to learn more about the centre's business and explore if it would be open to partnerships and collaborations with South African innovation institutions.

As part of strengthening the cooperation between South Africa and Iceland in the blue economy, Ambassador Kotze met with the founder and Chairperson of the Icelandic Ocean Cluster, Dr. Thor Sigfusson on 4 November 2025. The meeting discussed the cluster's 100% utilisation of fish model and the potential of such model being expanded to South Africa in the near future. The Ambassador also had the opportunity to visit Matorka, one of Iceland's numerous aquaculture companies that specialises in Arctic char fish. While at Matorka, Ambassador had the chance to engage with South African employees and observe the company's fish processing facility.
