10 years of the Gotthard Base Tunnel!

Why Switzerland keeps crossing the Alps 🇨🇭🏔️

Switzerland lies at the crossroads of Europe, yet much of its territory is covered by mountains. For centuries, the Alps have been both a natural barrier and a strategic passage connecting northern and southern Europe.

Long before modern tunnels, routes such as the Gotthard Pass played a central role in trade and travel across the continent. In 1882, the first Gotthard railway tunnel transformed mobility by allowing trains to pass through the Alps rather than over them, making transport faster, safer and more reliable.

Today, projects such as the 57-kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel continue this long history of connectivity. From mountain passes to world-record rail tunnels, the objective remains unchanged: connecting Europe across the Alps.

Switzerland doesn’t grow coffee beans… yet it is the world’s 2nd largest coffee exporter by value! 🇨🇭☕️
Swiss coffee exports are worth more than chocolate’s and cheese’s combined! 🤯
So how? Coffee beans from around the world are imported to Switzerland, where they’re roasted and transformed into premium portioned products like capsules, instant coffee and other high-end specialties, before being exported worldwide.
The country became a global hub for coffee trading and developed a real “Coffee Valley”, bringing together major coffee companies, traders and experts.
Its success also comes from Swiss suppliers of high-precision components. 70% of fully automatic coffee machines produced in the world are Swiss-made.

Discover the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces… 🍇🇨🇭

Spanning over 800 hectares, Lavaux is Switzerland’s largest continuous vineyard region and is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007.

Overlooking Lake Geneva and the Alps, its iconic hillside terraces are rooted in a centuries-old tradition shaped by generations of winegrowers.

Thanks to the famous “three suns”: direct sunlight, lake reflections, and heat stored in the stone walls, Lavaux wines have a truly distinctive character. ☀️

Have you ever been to Lavaux or is it on your bucket list? 👇

🌼 Among chocolate, mountains, and cows, the edelweiss stands as one of Switzerland’s most iconic symbols. 🇨🇭

You can find it on the 5-franc coin, on military insignia, and even in the logo of a Swiss airline. Today, it grows in the Alps at 2,000 to 3,000 meters of altitude, on exposed limestone slopes, where it withstands strong winds and intense sunlight. 🏔️

However, the edelweiss is not originally from the Alps: it is believed to have migrated from Asia during the Ice Age. 🌏

In the 19th century, it became a symbol of courage, as picking it often required climbing steep and dangerous rock faces. With the rise of tourism, the flower was threatened by over-picking. While it is no longer considered endangered at the federal level, it remains protected in several cantons.

Considered “kitsch” in the 20th century, it experienced a revival in the 1990s, driven by renewed interest in tradition and authenticity. Today, the edelweiss represents simplicity, quality, and a deep connection to the Alpine landscape.

How do you turn oil into one of the world's most powerful financial legacies? We asked the man who helped build it.

On Wednesday, the Swiss Residence welcomed students from ETH Zurich's MAS MTEC program for a rare evening with Knut Norheim Kjær, one of the architects of the Government Pension Fund Norway. From the bold decisions that shaped the fund to its role and challenges today, Prof. Kjær brought the story to life in a way no textbook can.

The Q&A was sharp, the debate was real, and the reception that followed gave everyone plenty to keep talking about.
Thank you to Prof. Kjær for such an inspiring lecture, and to all the students who joined us. 🇨🇭🇳🇴

🇨🇭 Switzerland is quietly becoming one of Europe’s key data hubs. And most people have no idea how much infrastructure is already behind the digital services we use every day.

More than 120 data centers are already operating across the country, with new facilities under construction. Companies are drawn by a combination of political stability, reliable electricity, strong data protection and fast connectivity.

At the same time, the AI boom is accelerating demand for computing power.

Zurich alone now hosts more than 30 data centers and is increasingly positioning itself as a hub for AI-related activities. Behind every cloud service, AI model, video call or search query, there is physical infrastructure running 24/7.

But there’s another side to this story.

Data centers consume huge amounts of electricity and water to keep servers running and cool. As the sector expands, pressure on energy systems is growing worldwide.

In Switzerland, some operators are already experimenting with ways to reduce that impact:

♻️ Closed cooling systems

🏙️ Waste heat reused to heat buildings

☀️ Solar panels installed on rooftops

And at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano, the “Alps” supercomputer uses water from Lake Lugano for cooling while supporting climate modelling, weather forecasting and advanced AI applications.

The future of AI is not only about algorithms.

It’s also about energy, infrastructure and places to store and process data.

Would you trust your data to a country like Switzerland? 👀

What comes to mind when you think of Switzerland? Cows, mountains… or watches? ⌚

Swiss watchmaking began with tower clocks and pocket watches between the 14th and 16th centuries.

In the 16th century, Jean Calvin banned ostentatious jewellery but encouraged clocks to help regulate religious life. Genevan jewellers then partnered with French refugee watchmakers, combining decorative craftsmanship with technical expertise to create smaller, more refined watches.

The spread of watchmaking from Geneva to the Jura Arc region marked a turning point.

In the late 17th century, Daniel Jeanrichard of Le Locle played a key role in developing watchmaking’s division of labour, known as “établissage”. In this decentralized system, specialists, including Jura farmers idle in winter, produced standardized components that were later assembled in a central location. ⚙️

In the 1970s, quartz technology and foreign competition triggered a crisis in the Swiss watch industry.

In response, the Swiss watch industry reinvented itself: Swatch, launched by Nicolas G. Hayek in the 1980s, developed affordable, stylish watches, while traditional brands repositioned mechanical watches as luxury symbols of craftsmanship and status.

Switzerland is home to more than 700 watchmaking companies and six schools dedicated to training future watchmakers. 🎓

The craftsmanship of mechanical watchmaking and art mechanics has been inscribed on UNESCO's List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2020.

Do you know any other facts about Swiss watchmaking?
