Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalparksenter er eit besøkssenter godkjend av Miljødirektoratet (English below!)

Senteret tilbyr informasjon om Jostedalsbreen nasjonalpark og dei omkringliggjande områda. Det inneheld òg ei utstilling om økologi, geologi, skred, samt ein geologisk park og botanisk hage vakkert plassert i strandkanten mot Oppstrynsvatnet. I kafeen og souvenirbutikken kan du slappe av med ein kopp kaffi under besøket. Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalparksenter is a visitor center authorized by the Norwegian Ministry of Environment. The center offers information about Jostedalsbreen national park and the surrounding areas. It also contains an exhibition about ecology, geology, avalanches and more with a geological and botanical garden beautifully located next to the shore. There is also a cinema which shows a movie about the national park. In the cafè and the souvenir shop you can relax with a cup of coffee during the visit. Welcome!

Flo, 21 km from Jostedalsbreen National Park Center, is a small village with an unexpected football story.

The Flo family that has several professional football players, including Jostein Flo, Tore André Flo and Håvard Flo, has its roots here.

What makes this story even more interesting is the landscape around Flo. This is a mountain village, with steep slopes and very little flat ground. There is not even a single football pitch!

You can see that for yourself by following the old route over Flofjellet towards Vollset.

The hike starts in Flo, and the first section is the steepest part of the route. The road is easy to follow, though, and as you walk, the views open up over Oppstrynsvatnet and the mountains. When you reach Flofjellhytta, located 535 m a.s.l., the route changes: from here, it becomes much gentler towards Vollset.

Along the way, you pass three mountain lakes: Ångelsvatnet, Stegholsvatnet and Nedstevatnet, as well as several information signs telling the history of the area. At Stegholsvatnet, you cross the former county boundary between Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal. The rock that marked this old boundary is still there.

The full route to Vollset is 9.2 km one way, but you can also choose to end the hike at Flofjellhytta or, even better, by the third lake, Nedstevatnet.

The hike to Vesleskåla, at 1.238 metres above sea level, offers great viewpoints over Loen and Nordfjord.

The hike starts at Tjugen, about 2,5 km from Loen, and follows the well-known Skålastien towards Skåla. Further up, you walk along stone steps and enter the Jostedalsbreen National Park.

When you reach Skålavatnet, at around 1.140 metres, turn right. The final section to the summit is relatively short (but a little steep and rocky), with a clearly marked trail.

At the top, the views of the fjord, mountains and glaciers are simply breathtaking.

Vesleskåla stands at 1.238 metres, while the nearby Skåla reaches 1.848 metres. The two peaks share the same starting point in Tjugen, but Vesleskåla provides a shorter alternative for hikers who do not want to continue all the way to Skåla.

You may have seen Lovatnet before. It appears on postcards, in travel books and all over social media. It is one of Norway’s most beautiful lakes and is just a short drive from Jostedalsbreen National Park Center. 🚗

Lovatnet stretches for around 11 kilometres through Lodalen, with steep mountains rising on both sides and glaciers at the head of the valley. Its turquoise-green water is one of its most distinctive features. The colour comes from glacial meltwater carrying fine rock particles into the lake. 💚

It is also surprisingly deep: it reaches 138 metres at its deepest point.

From the lake you can see an impressive waterfall. Ramnefjellsfossen, also known as Utigardsfossen, has a total drop of 818 metres and is ranked as the 11th tallest waterfall in the world. 💦

Lovatnet has also been shaped by major landslides. In 1905 and 1936, huge sections of Ramnefjellet fell into the lake, creating enormous waves. The rocks from these landslides are still visible in the water today. The story of these tr@gic events is part of the exhibition at Jostedalsbreen National Park Center. 🪨

One of the best ways to experience Lovatnet is from the water. During the summer, MS Kjenndal II takes visitors from Sande to Kjenndalstova at the end of the lake, offering views of the mountains, waterfalls and glaciers surrounding Lodalen. 🛳️

Glaciers are not static. They advance and retreat according to the balance between accumulated snowfall and ice lost through melting.

Kjenndalsbreen, the lowest branch of the Jostedalsbreen, shows this clearly. Between 1980 and 1997, the glacier advanced more than 300 metres. After that period, it began to retreat again, losing 599 metres by 2009.

Today, a hike of just 400 metres from the parking area takes you to a viewpoint where you can admire the glacier as it seems to slide down from the mountainside.

Many year ago, the ice covered the entire mountainside, reaching all the way to the lake formed by meltwater. That meltwater also adds to the beauty of the valley. A long waterfall runs almost alongside the glacier, creating another striking natural feature of this part of Norway.

Kjenndalsbreen is one of the easiest glacier to access in Jostedalsbreen National Park. It is about 17 km from Loen, along a road that follows Lovatnet, one of Norway’s most beautiful lakes, known for its turquoise waters.

The gods of rain have been working extra hard this year. 🌧️

But have you ever wondered why Western Norway gets so much precipitation?

Much of the rain in Norway comes from moist air carried in from the Atlantic Ocean. When this moist air reaches the mountains of Western Norway, it is forced upwards. As the air rises, it cools, water vapour condenses, and forms the precipitation. This is called orographic precipitation.

The higher and steeper the mountains, the more strongly they can influence this process. This is one reason why the areas around the western fjords receive more precipitation than many parts of Eastern Norway. Some of the wettest areas of Western Norway sum more than 3.000 mm of precipitation in a normal year, while areas on the eastern, sheltered side of the mountains can receive less than 300 mm.

But it is exactly the rain that makes the landscape so beautiful. Here in the Jostedalsbreen area, the mountains, valleys and glaciers all form part of the same landscape shaped by water. Rain and snow feed the rivers, waterfalls, lakes and glaciers throughout the region.

So, whether the forecast brings rain or sunshine, we can all agree on one thing: the Western fjords are beautiful either way. 💚

Sunny days are finally back, making it a perfect time to hike in the mountains. ☀️🥾

Before setting off, take a few minutes to check the Fjellvettreglene, the Norwegian Mountain Code. 🏔️ These nine rules cover everything from planning your route to dealing with changing weather and unexpected situations. Knowing them before you start can help you make better decisions along the way. 💡

Check the weather and mountain conditions before you leave, and choose a hike that matches your experience, fitness and the conditions. Tell someone where you are going, especially if you are heading into an area with limited mobile coverage.

The weather can change quickly in the mountains, even on a sunny summer day. Bring suitable clothing, enough food and water, and a map and compass. A phone and GPS are useful, but they should not replace knowing where you are. 🤳🏼

When in Norway, do as the Norwegians do. Having a Kvikk Lunsj in your hiking kit is always a good idea. It is a chocolate bar that many Norwegians enjoy during a break in the mountains. 🍫

Stay on marked trails where possible, respect nature and other people, and take your rubbish with you. If the conditions change or the route becomes too demanding, turn around. There will always be another day for the summit.

🇳🇴 Nokre vegar tek deg til ein stad. Andre gjer sjølve reisa til målet.

Dette er Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, den gamle fjellvegen mellom Grotli og Videsæter. Vegen er rundt 27 km lang og går over Strynefjellet, med utsikt til fjell, vatn og snøfelt undervegs. 🏔️

This is Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, the old mountain road between Grotli and Videsæter. The road is about 27 km long and crosses the Strynefjellet mountain area, with views of mountains, lakes and snowfields along the way. 🏔️

🇳🇴 Eit steinminnesmerke utanfor Jostedalsbreen nasjonalparksenter tek vare på historia om eitt av dei største snøskreda i Stryn.

Minnesmerket heidrar dei 35 menneska som miste livet i snøskred i Sundalen, Gjørven og Tenden mellom 8. og 26. februar 1868. Det viser namn og alder på alle som omkom, frå eit 1 år gammalt barn til ei 77 år gammal kvinne.

Minnesmerket inneheld òg avisartiklar som vart publiserte kort tid etter hendingane. Dei skildrar korleis snøskreda øydela gardar, råka heile familiar, og korleis rundt 100 menn leita gjennom snø, steinar, tre og is for å hente ut dei omkomne.

Meir enn 150 år etter desse hendingane har minnesmerket framleis ei personleg tyding for mange. Frå tid til anna stansar besøkande ved Jostedalsbreen nasjonalparksenter for å lese namna på steinen og oppdagar at nokre av dei høyrde til deira eigne forfedrar.

🇬🇧 A stone monument outside Jostedalsbreen National Park Center preserves the story of one of Stryn’s largest avalanches.

The monument honours the 35 people who lost their lives in avalanches in Sundalen, Gjørven and Tenden between 8 and 26 February 1868. It records the name and age of every victim, from a 1-year-old child to a 77-year-old woman.

The memorial also includes newspaper reports published shortly after the events. They describe how the avalanches destroyed farms, claimed entire families, and how around 100 men searched through snow, rocks, trees and ice to recover the victims.

More than 150 years after these events, the monument still has a personal meaning for many people. From time to time, visitors to Jostedalsbreen National Park Center stop to read the names on the stone and discover that some belonged to their own ancestors.

Glomnesnakken is the shortest hike to a mountain summit in Oppstryn. 🥾

It is a good choice if you are looking for a short but challenging hike. The trail is only 2.5 km to the top, but climbs 620 metres, making it a route with a steady ascent.

The hike starts near Glomnes Farm, about 200 metres from the parking area. The first section passes through a sheep enclosure before climbing the mountainside (please remember to close the gates behind you!).

As you gain elevation, the trail reaches Kvilefloten, a natural place to take a break before continuing uphill. Along the way, you can look across Glomnessetra, Segestadsetra and Nos/Bolstadsetra, three former summer mountain farms. The viewpoint also overlooks several of the area’s highest peaks, including Lodalskåpa (2,083 m), Middagshyrna (1,857 m) and Tomefjellet (1,835 m).

The final kilometre is marked by a 1 km sign. From here, the trail becomes steeper and includes a short rocky step where you need to use your hands. It is not technically difficult, but the rock becomes slippery when wet.

From the summit, at 650 m.a.s.l., the view stretches across Oppstrynsvatnet, Erdalen, Fosdalen, Veslebygda and the surrounding mountains.

If you want a longer hike, you can continue to Segestad and return through Glomsdalen, with a stop at the beautiful Glomnesfossen.

Stryneelva is one of Norway’s most beautiful rivers.

Its turquoise-green water, sweeping bends and spectacular setting make it one of the highlights of the Stryn valley.

Although Stryneelva is only 8 kilometres long, it is a great example of how glaciers shape an entire river system. The river flows out of Oppstrynsvatnet, a lake fed by meltwater from Jostedalsbreen, before winding through the Stryn valley on its way to Nordfjord, passing farmland, forests and the village of Stryn.

Stryneelva is also one of Norway’s best-known rivers for Atlantic salmon and sea trout, attracting anglers from around the world. It is designated a National Salmon River (Nasjonalt laksevassdrag), giving special protection to its Atlantic salmon population and habitat. Every year, salmon return from the North Atlantic to the very river where they were born to spawn.

One of the most beautiful views of Stryneelva can be enjoyed from the Skuten hike. The trail starts across the road from Nedstryn Church and follows an easy route to a viewpoint overlooking the turquoise-green water.
