Bergen Assembly

Bergen Assembly Bergen Assembly is an exploratory platform for art taking place in the city of Bergen every three years. Next edition in 2028.

Bergen Assembly originated from the Bergen Biennial Conference in 2009, which was a response to a proposition by the municipality of Bergen to establish an international biennial for contemporary art in the city. The conference discussed the question “To biennial or not to biennial?” with international curators, artists, and academics, and was followed by The Biennial Reader (Hatje Cantz/Bergen Kunsthall, 2010)—to date the most comprehensive publication on the history and practice of biennials or regularly occurring exhibitions and events in a global perspective. The first edition of Bergen Assembly was titled Monday Begins on Saturday and was convened by Ekaterina Degot and David Riff, manifesting in a multi-venue exhibition and a publication in 2013. The second edition of the triennial was led by Tarek Atoui, the collective freethought, and the collaboration PRAXES in 2016. The third edition of Bergen Assembly in 2019, Actually, the Dead Are Not Dead was convened by Iris Dressler and Hans D. Christ in collaboration with a core group of ten curators, artists, theorists and activists. The fourth edition will take place in the autumn of 2022, convened by Saâdane Afif.

Ellen Viste is a meteorologist, now working with climate science communication. She combines meteorology with interdisciplinary environmental research to understand changing weather systems and water resources. She lives in Bergen, a city known for its rain and as the cradle of modern weather forecasting. She explores how climate knowledge can be shared across disciplinary and public contexts. She has written the books Tales of the Wind and Temperature.

Chiemi Shimada is a London-based artist and filmmaker whose practice spans film, performance, installation, and participatory workshops. She explores memory, modernity, liminal experiences, and the social realities of late-stage capitalism, creating works that investigate how histories, identities, and relationships are formed and reimagined.

She joins the gathering on 11 September with mmm, a film that traces an eclectic constellation of clouds across Japanese cinema from the 1920s to the present.

Lars Bang Larsen is a writer and curator. His research revolves around the limits of Western art, ideas, and technologies, and the mindbodies they have affected in the modern era. Kei Kreutler explores how cultural narratives of technology shape what worlds we can build. As a Lead Researcher at the Protocol Institute, she facilitates an interdisciplinary research group on memory, technology, and culture. Her forthcoming book, Artificial Memory, places emerging technologies in a much longer history of mnemonics.

Simone Kotva is a theologian and writer who teaches at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. She is a scholar-practitioner of Western mysticism with a training in philosophical theology. The way Simone sees it, every mystical text is an invitation to experiment, practice and observe results. Simone is the author of Effort and Grace: On the Spiritual Exercise of Philosophy (2020) and Ecologies of Ecstasy: Mysticism, Philosophy and Vegetal Life (2026).

Based in Bergen, Simone explores textures at the intersection of harmony, dissonance and noise, creating evolving works that invite listeners to form their own relationship with sound. Each project begins with a defined framework of electronic and/or acoustic instruments. Through improvisation, he tests these limits to develop a distinctive vocabulary of textures and gestures.

Simone Ghetti will perform a concert on Friday, 11 September, as part of A Machine as Complex as the World Itself at Korskirken in Bergen.

Nolan Oswald Dennis is an artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. They explore ‘a black consciousness of space’ - the material and metaphysical conditions of decolonization - questioning histories of space and time through system-specific interventions.

This September, Nolan Oswald Dennis is in residency at Bergen Kunsthall’s Live studio, developing a new project for the Kunsthall’s 2027 Live Commission

Dennis joins A Machine as Complex as the World Itself on 11 September at Korskirken in Bergen with the listening exercise Earth/Sky.

We are introducing the contributors to A Machine as Complex as the World Itself. Meet Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev! 🌟

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (b. 1957) is a curator, author, art historian, and retired museum director. Since delivering her 2023 Novo Nordisk lecture, "Prolegomena to a theory on artistic freedom," at the University of Copenhagen, she has been exploring 21st-century subject formation through a global lecture series. This research—which weaves together reflections on angels, engineers, agents, autism, and dementia—will culminate in the exhibition Hallucinangels, opening in China in early 2028.

Christov-Bakargiev joins A Machine as Complex as the World Itself, 11–12 September at Korskirken in Bergen.

Marcus Coates is an artist who lives and works in London. From his attempts to become animal to his vicarious experiences on behalf of people, his work offers an inquiry into the degrees to which we can understand, know, and relate to others. Often performative — using a process of radical empathy as motivation to create, examine, and critique relational tools — he tests actual and perceived boundaries between individuals, within communities, and with other species.

Over the coming days, we’ll be introducing the contributors to A Machine as Complex as the World Itself 💚 Meet Alice Bucknell!

Alice Bucknell is an artist, writer, and educator based in Los Angeles. Their work explores videogames as interfaces for understanding complex systems, relations, and forms of knowledge. Bucknell is generally interested in the ecological dimensions of play as an embodied technology that dissolves binaries between human and nonhuman, natural and synthetic intelligence, and self vs world. Their videogame Earth Engine speculates on the idea of planetary play, inverting typical gaming hierarchies by centering the planet as the main player and casting the human operator as an NPC.

Bucknell will contribute to A Machine as Complex as the World Itself with a specially recorded talk, presented as part of the programme on 11–12 September at Korskirken in Bergen.
