Lov’ those guys!
The Engineers, or sappers, who were both combatants and specialized technicians, had a major role to play in the course of the landing operations and during the Battle of Normandy.
During the assault phase, on 6 June 1944 in the morning, the amphibious brigades of sappers were entrusted with the task of clearing the beaches (removing obstacles, destruction of mines) silencing the guns concealed in the concrete pillboxes, opening breaches in the minefields using detectors and developing exit routes from the beaches.
Once the initial assault phase had succeeded, the Engineers were responsible for clearing, re-establishing and maintaining the routes to be used by convoys of vehicles, half-tracks and tanks. This meant filling-in anti-tank ditches, clearing ruins, repairing and maintaining the bridges, roads, and railways serving the front.
Besides the construction of the standard Bailey bridges, these front-line fighter-technicians had the task of building airfields in the Norman countryside by Air Force Engineers – using powerful civil engineering equipment, repairing port installations (Naval Engineers – Cherbourg, Le Havre) and supplying the armies with drinking water.
