🤝 A productive meeting took place yesterday in Sofia during International Symposium REM 2026 , bringing together key leaders from the global medical physics community:

EFOMP President Efi Koutsouveli reports from Sofia, Bulgaria.
International Symposium REM 2026 👇

The Bulgarian Society of Biomedical Physics and Engineering was founded in 1971 and became an EFOMP member in 1983. I was pleased yesterday to participate together with Sébastien Gros in the ‘Ensuring Quality in IGRT’ workshop organized by BSBPE and to have the opportunity to meet its members and the board. Our presentations and discussions focused not only on joint actions at the European level but also on aligning practices across the Atlantic via American Association of Physicists in Medicine, reflecting our shared commitment to advancing the profession and improving the care of the patient. 🌐 ⚛️
🙏 Ivo Petrov Desislava Kostova-Lefterova Desislava Ivanova Anna Zagorska Rada Borisova and all the members who travelled from across the country to attend this meeting.

Looking forward to further discussions during the International Symposium on Radiation Exposure Monitoring in Diagnostic Imaging organized in Sofia this week.

Following the recent elections, the new committee brings together early-career medical physicists from across Europe, representing different backgrounds, countries, and areas of expertise, with the shared goal of strengthening collaboration and connection within the medical physics community.

🔸 Matteo Galetto (Convenor) – Clinical medical physicist at Policlinico Gemelli in Rome, with interests in radiotherapy, MR-Linac, quantitative MRI, and international collaboration.
🔸 Maria Steinberger (Vice-Convenor) – Head of Medical Physics (Radiology) at LMU University Hospital Munich, focused on medical imaging physics, AI in radiology, and radiation protection.
🔸 Virginia Piva (Secretary) – Medical physics resident in Italy, interested in AI, automation in radiotherapy, quantitative imaging, and science communication.
🔸 Miia Hurskainen – Medical Physicist Expert from Finland working in radiation therapy and theranostics, passionate about education and international collaboration.
🔸 Henriëtte Kuipers – Medical physics resident in The Netherlands with interests in imaging, neonatal MRS, IVF optimization, and clinical innovation.

📋 Over the coming years, the EC SIG aims to promote networking opportunities, educational initiatives, collaborations with national young groups, and projects supporting professional growth across Europe.

🙌 The new committee looks forward to contributing to an active, collaborative, and welcoming early-career medical physics community.

🤝 EFOMP representatives 📸 Marco Brambilla, Ruben Pauwels, Paddy Gilligan, Luis Brualla González, Oliver Blanck, and Stefano Lorentini participated in the Workshop of the SAMIRA Study on criteria for acceptability of medical radiological equipment (CARE) 👉🔗 https://www.eibir.org/projects/care/ held on 1–2 June 2026 in Luxembourg 🇱🇺.

📌 The workshop aimed to present the proposal for an updated and extended list of acceptability criteria developed by the consortium and further consult with Member States and other stakeholders on the proposed document to be published in the European Commission’s Radiation Protection Series.
