Samba in Motion: Brazil’s Living Tradition at BIMHUIS

On 12 July, Roda de Samba returns to BIMHUIS with an evening built around participation, improvisation and shared energy. Hosted by guitarist Nelson Latif, the event brings the atmosphere of a Brazilian roda to Amsterdam: musicians seated close to one another, voices joining in, rhythm moving through the room, and the audience becoming part of the performance.

This edition features the Brazilian Samba Machine, with Lilian Vieira and Rosana Brown on vocals, alongside Renata Jambeiro, Marcelo Café, Nelson Latif, Marijn van der Linden, Jura Gomes, Alaor Soares, Sandro Alves, Rafael Lima, Lucas Santana and Daniel Rodrigues, in a rich line-up of voices, 7-string guitar, cavaquinho, percussion, bass, saxophone, flute and trombone. The evening continues in the foyer with samba carrying the rhythm beyond the stage.

From mandolin and cavaquinho to percussion and collective singing, the programme reflects samba as a living practice: a form of music, encounter and memory that continues to reinvent itself wherever Brazilian artists and audiences meet.

This week highlights Brazil's growing contribution to the future of sustainable aviation and the global energy transition.

On 15 June, Secretary Renato Dutra from the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy ( ) and DG Michel Heijdra from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate ( ) signed the Brazil-Netherlands Cooperation on the Energy Transition Action Plan 2026-2028, expanding bilateral cooperation in strategic areas for a low-carbon economy.

The initiative consolidates the progress of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Energy Transition, signed during COP30, and foresees joint actions on topics such as SAF (sustainable aviation fuel), hydrogen, bioenergy, biorefineries, biofuels, carbon capture and storage (CCS), low GHG shipping development and offshore wind power.

From 15 to 17 June, a large and diverse Brazilian delegation, formed by government agencies, research institutions, development banks and industry, participated in the Sustainable Aviation Futures Congress in Amsterdam. The event is one of the leading international forums dedicated to SAF and aviation decarbonisation. The breadth of Brazil's SAF ecosystem was showcased in a booth by ApexBrasil, promoting investment and partnership opportunities across the SAF value chain.

During the event, National Secretary Renato Dutra presented Brazil's vision in the session "Brazilian SAF: Can Brazil become a global aviation fuel powerhouse?", highlighting the country's unique combination of renewable resources, industrial capabilities and supportive public policies.

The programme concluded on 18 June with technical visits to Shell, Neste and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, providing an opportunity for further exchanges on innovation, production, logistics and the deployment of sustainable aviation fuels.

As countries seek scalable pathways to decarbonise aviation, Brazil stands out as a strategic partner in the global transition towards cleaner air transport and cleaner energy.

The Embassy of Brazil in The Hague accompanied a series of meetings with representatives of the Brazilian Federal Data Processing Service (SERPRO) in Amsterdam and The Hague on 2 and 3 June, aimed at strengthening dialogue and promoting the exchange of experiences on digital transformation, artificial intelligence and data-driven public services.

On 2 June, the delegation met with the Municipality of Amsterdam at the AMS Institute, located in the historic Marineterrein innovation district, which serves as a living laboratory for urban innovation. The visit also provided an opportunity to learn firsthand about pioneering urban innovation projects, including Roboat.

Discussions focused on how Amsterdam uses data and technology to address urban challenges associated with a rapidly growing city. Experts presented initiatives related to digital rights, the responsible use of data, artificial intelligence, urban mobility and digital twins, highlighting how evidence-based approaches support policy design and evaluation.

The following day, the SERPRO mission was received by the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations for an in-depth exchange on digital governance, interoperability, digital twins, digital sovereignty, algorithm accountability and digital wallets.

The discussions highlighted shared challenges faced by Brazil and the Netherlands in connecting data, policy and public service delivery across complex multi-level governance systems. Participants exchanged views on artificial intelligence governance, cybersecurity, public digital infrastructure and strategies to safeguard citizens’ data while fostering innovation.

The meetings also underscored opportunities for future cooperation between Brazilian and Dutch institutions. As both countries advance ambitious digital transformation agendas, the exchanges reaffirmed the relevance of international collaboration in building innovative, transparent and citizen-centred public services.

The visits facilitated by the Embassy of Brazil took place alongside an official SERPRO mission to Money20/20 Europe.
