Behind the Scenes with Ambassador Mrs. Ardi Stoios-Braken
In our series of getting to know our new Ambassador we had the opportunity to ask her about some fun facts. We hope you enjoy.
Where were you born?
A small village – Liempde – between Eindhoven and Den Bosch
How many languages do you speak?
Four (Dutch, English, French and German) and I'm trying to learn two more (Spanish and Italian). I'm a fan/addict of DUO lingo (!)
Can you tell us a little about the background of your name?
My first name is not a name you will find in my passport – it's a variation of the name of my grandmother. Her name was Gerarda and my parents turned the last bit of her name into Ardi. It's not a very common name. My hyphenated surname is a combination of my husband’s name (Stoios) and my maiden name.
How do you pronounce Stoios?
Stoy-os (My husband’s family on his father’s side originates from the Northern part of Greece (the village of Kratero), close to the border with Northern-Macedonia.
What is one of your favourite hobbies?
The one that I spend the most time on would be reading; the one that I have neglected and hope to soon take up again is tennis.
Who is your favourite Dutch author? I like reading a lot, but do not have a favourite Dutch author. These days I probably read more in English than in Dutch. Dutch authors whose work I enjoyed reading recently are Roxanne van Iperen, and Herman Koch.
If you were not an Ambassador, what would you be? That's a difficult question: I could imagine a variety of careers: local politician (mayor?), lawyer, police officer, a vegetarian chef (not that I am a particularly talented cook), owner of a bookshop, journalist.
What is your most favourite “Dutch” event in Australia so far why? I had the pleasure and privilege to attend the match of the Orange Lionesses against the South-African women’s soccer team three days after my arrival in Australia. I enjoyed being part of the Orange fan parade.
