🎞️ Can archives become spaces for imagining overlooked histories and challenging colonial narratives?

ISS PhD researcher Roland Alvarez Chavez has curated Queering Brüning's Archive, an exhibition intervention at the MARKK Museum in Hamburg, featured within Resonating Images from Peru.

Drawing on Hans Heinrich Brüning's photographs and fieldwork in chicherías in northern Peru, Alvarez Chavez explores how these traditional gathering spaces can reveal alternative histories and q***r forms of community beyond binary gender roles.

The exhibition is on display until 27 June 2027, and a public workshop with Alvarez Chavez will take place on 2 July.

🤳 Are digital nomads the villains of gentrification? Or are they just symptoms of a deeper problem?

New on ISS Blog Bliss, PhD researcher Alberto Estrada examines how competing visions of Mexico City shape belonging, exclusion and urban transformation. Drawing on migration and urban studies, he asks a bigger question: who are cities really built for?

Alberto's research is part of the ongoing work of the Migration, Im/mobilities and Place Academic Team at ISS, which explores how migration and im/mobility influence places and shape people's lives.

🎓 Today, we celebrate an important milestone: 300 PhD graduates at ISS

Behind this number are 300 scholars whose curiosity, dedication and research have advanced knowledge and enriched debates on some of the world's most pressing development challenges.

This milestone reflects decades of learning, collaboration and exchange, as well as the lasting impact our PhD alumni continue to make in academia, policy and practice around the world.

To mark the occasion, we've published a commemorative booklet recognising the scholars who have been part of this journey.

🎓 Congratulations to Dr Marije Balt, who successfully defended her PhD thesis!

Dr Balt's research explores how European diplomats navigated EU–Türkiye migration cooperation during a period marked by geopolitical tensions and implementation challenges.

Introducing the concept of the ‘high-stakes arena’, the study sheds light on the everyday diplomatic practices that help sustain cooperation when political costs are high.

🎓 Congratulations to Dr Gabriela Villacís Izquierdo on successfully defending her PhD dissertation!

Dr Izquierdo's research explored how feminist approaches are reshaping humanitarian action in Colombia. Drawing on 11 months of ethnographic research across Bogotá, Norte de Santander, Cauca and Putumayo, she examined the experiences and practices of feminist international humanitarian organizations, women-led grassroots collectives and crisis-affected women organizing in their own communities.

📕 DevISSues takes a closer look at the state of global democracy.

What is the current ‘reverse wave’ of autocratization? What is fuelling it and how can it be resisted?

Our three themed articles approach these questions from various angles, focusing on solutions rather than challenges.

The issue also looks at the power of citizen science as illustrated by a new research project focusing on fossil fuel industry impacts. And we include an interesting conversation between ISS staff and students who share their experiences of the escalations of violence in Israel, Palestine and the broader region.

What could migration between Africa and Europe look like in 2045?

A new scenario-building report from the PACES project explores how climate vulnerability, AI, governance, labour markets and access to services could shape future migration decisions.

Rather than predicting a single outcome, the report brings together the strategic thinking of researchers, policymakers, business representatives, civil society actors and migrants to explore multiple possible futures, offering insights for migration research, policy and practice.
