How can we enable healthy and sustainable food choices for all?

Today is World Food Day. Every year, on October 16th, this day calls attention to hunger and malnutrition around the world: which continues to increase due to conflict, climate change and poverty.

Around the world, many activities will take place to bring attention to this topic. One such example was the inspiring event which the Netherlands Food Partnership organized yesterday in Amsterdam. NFP brought together Dutch food professionals to talk about challenges faced by the current food system. What is the role that digitalization can play? How can we achieve a living income for all? And: how can we enable healthy and sustainable food choices for all?

Not only on World Food Day, but year round, the Netherlands is committed to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 - Zero Hunger in 2030. That’s why we are investing in better nutrient intake, higher productivity for small-scale food producers and sustainable management of natural resources.

Did you know that more than 50% of the world population is under 30? And that children born today will face seven times more heatwaves compared to people born in 1960, as well as three times as many floods and failed harvests?

Young people are the single most important stakeholders of the future. The climate decisions we make today will cascade through our societies and define their tomorrow. That’s why involving young people in decision-making processes and elevating their voices is key. Watch the great video below to learn more about the We Are Tomorrow Global Partnership and how it boosts global youth participation and enhances climate action!

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is tackling global food system problems. And with results. By 2020, Dutch efforts had helped 14 million people improve their food intake, nearly 2 million farmers improve their productivity and 617,000 hectares to be used more sustainably.

But there is still a lot to do: the facts speak for themselves. In 2020, 720-811 million people worldwide faced hunger; that’s 1 in 10 people. At the same time, 1 in 3 people are overweight. In addition, agriculture is responsible for more than 25% of all greenhouse gas emissions. And the changing climate is causing a drastic loss of crops, especially in Africa. In short: our food systems are in crisis.

That's why we're participating in the UN Food Systems Summit 2021 to ensure that we accelerate positive developments and collectively combat the underlying causes. Today, this Summit has begun, virtually, in New York. Would you like to watch the Summit?
