The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly accelerated the growth of distance learning and teaching. This sudden growth has also been influenced by the institutional pressure to act quickly and move classes from a traditional classroom to the virtual environment. While the rapid development in technology has made distance education convenient and accessible, there are a number of challenges for online education that are repeatedly highlighted in the literature. The purpose of the project is to shed light on SSMS student and lecturers’ experiences of online learning and teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Invitation to Harvard MUN
Dear SSMS students from year 2 and above,
The board of Leiden Model United Nations has invited SSMS student to apply for their Harvard National MUN delegation of 2020.
HNMUN is the biggest MUN conference in the world where students represent a country in a simulation of various UN committees. It is a fantastic opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the students’ studies and network, and it adds an impressive achievement to their CV.
Students that get accepted to be part of our delegation will go through an 11-week preparatory track starting November 12th which will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at the Leiden Law Faculty.
The application deadline is on the 3rd of November. By then students must submit a CV and letter of motivation (no longer than 1 page) to [email protected]

Today all graduates will receive their diploma during the graduation ceremony! After 4 years (or more) of hard working they can now call themselves experts in the field of Safety and Security management, real professionals.

Although it sounds odd, it is always great to let these students go, because we know we have taught them everything they need and that they are ready for the next step in their life's and careers.

To all of you, it has been a great pleasure to have you, you did well and we wish you the best of luck from now on.

We know that the world has become a bit safer today.

This Saturday it is National Safety Day in the Netherlands. This year the theme is cybersecurity.

Also this year the city of Almere is the center of Safety Day. The police, NS, Fire brigade, the army (Land forces, marine and the Royal Marechaussee), Red Cross, rescue brigade, customs service, and many more organizations in the area of safety and security will be present.

There are a lot of demonstrations (also with some awesome vehicles) and information stands. Sometimes you can participate too. Like in the escape room and the safety container, where you can experience what is left of a house if a fire breaks out.

There will also be free entry for the safety museum PIT.

Furthermore, if you are looking for a job or orientating for the future, there is also a job market.

Today it is Liberation Day in the Netherlands. Today the Dutch celebrate the end of the Second World War. But we also celebrate that we live in freedom, have a democracy and have human rights in the Netherlands.

But what does liberation actually mean? How does it work? And what about the people who are not free? Well, you will probably discuss all that in SSMS during one of your classes.

For now, join the Dutch and celebrate freedom.

For our foreign students, this might by your first May 4th in the Netherlands. Please be aware that today is National Remembrance Day in the Netherlands. This is the day that the Dutch remember all war victims (clearly related to Safety and Security). The Dutch do this at exactly 20:00 and they will be silent for 2 minutes. It might be that shops close, public transport stops, and cars pull over at the side of the road for a few minutes.

Please be aware and show your respect. Your silence between 20:00 – 20:02 will be much appreciated by the Dutch. As non-Dutch you are of course also always welcome at one of the many Remembrance ceremonies.
